I am almost in need of a new set of tires for my 911 and have a few basic questions. I may order the tires from Discount Tire Direct of Teletire and am wondering where they can be mounted. I mean can any tire shop do this or do the have to have a "Fuchs Safe" mounting machine.
Also, where can they be balanced. I noticed the wheel balance weights are flat, and glued on the the rim. Is the Porsche dealer the only place to get them balanced with these special weights? Thanks, Rich |

Nearly any place can do this. Act concerned and watch them, and they'll probably do a careful job. One poster recently told of the tire guy using a floor jack to avoud damage to the car on the lift.
Most tire shops have the high tech "touchless" mounting machines, and they all have the stick-on weights. The difference is in the care taken by the technician. Watch them. ------------------ '83 SC |

Superman is right, I recently ordered tires from http://www.Tirerack.com and called around for a shop nearby. I settled on the local Firestone dealer (business is kinda slow for them right now) and explained that I had my own tires and wheels and would they mount & balance. After I explained that the wheels were for a Porsche, they put their top guy on it. He was great and took tremendous care. Wanted to show his work..I was very pleased. Total cost $73.00

I just had my track tires mounted. I took a few precautions. I used masking tape around the whole outside rim, then wrote with a large marker "ADHESIVE WEIGHTS ON INSIDE ONLY!" I also put large arrows indicating the direction I wanted these tires to go. Motto: You can never be to careful. There is a slim chance the guy you talk to is going to be doing your wheels. They ended up doing a good job. If they tear the masking tape, then you know somethings up.

I'd suggest asking local Porsche folks (at autocrosses, or at the track, or maybe the local PCA regoin's Web site) for recommendations. That's what I did, and found a guy who was recommended by just about everyone. He was amazing. Very careful, knew the proper torques by heart, tightened everything slowly by hand, knew to look out for oil lines under the car, and so on.
