Post More About Wires...Please

I really hate to dig this subject up again, but I have a few specific questions that I would like resolution to before I begin my plug wire rebuild.

The motor is '73 RS Spec 2.7 with MFI.

I did a lot of reading of last posts, and seemed to arrive at the following:

Good choices are AC Delco and Belden bulk wire, in a stainless steel, solid core, with silicon insulation, in 7mm. Ok, sounds simple enough. Well, I have not been able to locate any AC Delco wire at all. For Belden, I called them directly, only to find that they have sold their cable and wire business to Federal Mogul. I then contacted Federal Mogul and they told me they don't sell retail, but they use Napa as a supplier.

To may a long story, a little less long... here is my question. The Belden wires that are not braided are refered to as "tin metallic core". They don't way whether they are solid core or stainless steel, just tin metallic.

Should I continue to hunt until I find stainless steel, solid core, 7mm wires? I just want to get moving on doing this, but I don't want to waste time and money on something that is not optimal for my engine.

Any more thoughts or suggestions on this subject?

Thanks,

John

John,
I just went through the same search as you and was unable to find this elusive 7mm stainless steel core wire at any auto parts store. Maybe someone knows of a place to order it online?

Anyway, I picked up a unversal 6-cyl set made by ACCEL. They are solid core but made of copper which is probably not as durable as SS, but I've used these wires in the past with good results. Total cost for the wires? $14.99 and about one hour to cut, crimp, and screw on the Beru connectors. With the new wires, cap, rotor, points, and plugs, I could not believe how much smoother my 2.2L ran.

Good Luck,
Mark

I just did a similar thing- used a universal 8cyl set made by an Australian outfit and screwed them into the Beru's. 7mm stainless though. I nearly used Accell too, they seemed great, but the shop was out of the correct variants for the distributor fittings. Don't sweat it too much; it's reasonably inexpensive and you get two spare wires to practice tying knots in.

After a long and arduous, well, lazy search for the right parts, I was very excited to find them at the Mercedes dealership. I don't know if the early cars have the male screw caps on the ends. My Berus are female and the screw caps for the wire ends are really cool, as it turns out. they take a double crimp. One at the base of the screw thing, and one around the edge of the cap. I used a wire crimper and needle nose pliers to accomplish the circular cap crimp, alittle challenging. but wait until you see the great fit. The wire goes into the screw stud thing for a very nice connection.

Okay, I digress, but the 1k Ohm Bosch resistors are also available. Just reuse them, though, if they are okay. Thanks, John Walker, for the great part numbers.

And finally, the question: I used copper core.

Picked up a set of Jacobs igniton wires for my 944 for around $50.

They have a claim, it goes something in the lines of "no other ignition wire conducts better", and for the money, I don't think you can beat that. Mine are 8mm, with silicone insulation.

Hello

Jacobs, Accel, Blue max have 7 mm silicone wires.

I prefer the Bosch or Beru OEM stuff. Is also OEM on Mercedes, BMW, VW/Audi......

Old units have direct screw on endīs. Newer units ( Since 2,7 with harness ) have crimp on M3 endīs.

If your sparkplugconnectors have more then 10 KOhm then they are carbidge. The old Brown Beru units are much pricier then the newer black plastic units.

Also leave enough cable make an U turn at the connector. So the water will not stand in the connector rubber just flow down to drop from the bow.

Donīt use to hard wires as you might can snap them into the clamps under the butterflys. If they are to hard then bush the wire trough.

I have no way of checking, it's their claim that the wires are 8mm. I'm not going to cut the wire and measure it personally.

John,
I recently got a 100' roll of Belden 7MM, solid core wire at NAPA for $49.00.

I changed the wires on my 86 911, it made a day and night difference.
It runs much smoother and allot more power and winds up much quicker..

I did find that the coil wire was not properly crimmped to the cconnector and pulled out and frayed and correded badly.

Have a good weekend.

the roll i have in my hand is a "power path" brand. 7mm. distributed by cooper automotive, chesterfield, mo, 63017. 100ft hd/metallic #734803. my local parts store just orders it from a warehouse. there's plenty of other brands, but you have to luck out on a source. big brother's making it hard on us.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I think the "8mm" or "7mm" refers to the outside diameter of the wires. The insulation. I think that counts, but what really makes a difference is the wire inside. A quality wire could be either "size". Right?

8MM wires do not fit stock plug connectors, or crimp on wire ends.

Magnecore!!!!!! Use the 10mm wires. A little pricey, but noticed a difference right away on my 72 911 mfi. Also have them on my saab spg. They are hand made and made to last. Great quality and workmanship, I've spent an arm and a leg on most parts for this car-might as well do the same for wires.
