How Common are special order paint colors?
My new project arrived earlier in the week, and I'm going over and through everything to get started.
One of the (pleasant) surprises when looking the car over was finding the paint code tag (PO thought it was missing) Apparently the PO didn't see if it because it was still covered in the masking tape from the last poor quality and at this point 20 year old, ugly purple paint job. Anyways, it's an '80 SC targa that was later converted to a widebody cab using factory parts. Original paint code is 624-9-3. Thanks to Forum search I already know that color to be Anthracite Metallic. I really like the factory color, and so I'll be bringing it back to that regardless of rarity, but I am curious about how common both this color individually, and special order colors in general are. |

I'm in a very similar boat with a project I picked up 2 weeks ago. '84 Coupe with L999 paint code on options sticker, but no metal paint card (?) on the drivers door jam. I bought it from the 1st owner, and she informed me the paint color is Iris blue pearl. Oddly, Iris blue wasn't offered until 1994.
Car is 100% original, no body work or paint. |

624-9-3 is "anthrazite grey metallic", a special order color from Daimler Benz ("Anthrazitgraumetallic" Nr. 172 (Herbol 624))

Can anyone decode this paint code on a '77 911 car? Maybe the BMW color and Daimler Benz Colors were a little different? |
