OK - so I've fallen into the hype of K&N I bought the air filter for my '93 C4 with no noticable change and I replaced the stock Porsche Filter with the $18 K&N with the check valve that stops the oil from "draining back" and stopping "dry starts" Is this just hype or does this feature have some value?

I don't know. My car has 130,000 miles and doesn't know who K&N is. What would a dry start mean to a dry sump engine anyway? Pressure is always up instantly, anway alot faster than my Volvos are.

well, i'm not sure about K&N for your Porsche but....
the stock filters that go to Lotus Esprit turbos are about $40 each. this rediculous price included the fact that they had a built-in check valve to prevent oil starvation after the engine was turned off. at least, this is what several guys with Lotus Esprit turbos told me. they said that you just have to break down and shell over the $40 for the Lotus filter because this check valve is so important in those cars (if you want to prevent damage). $18.00 for a porsche filter? hmm, well, i pay $10 for the Mobil 1 filters for my VW, so why the heck not ![]() just my .02 cents ![]() obin |

First, the factory filters for my '83 SC have a check valve. Second, this is overkill since the filter is above the tank and, more importantly, the tank is above the pump. You see, those Stuttgart geniuses put the oil supply ABOVE the pump. Gravity provides an instant supply to the pump.
And finally, I tried a Fram filter and it gurgled loudly. I have been putting the $6 Mahles on my car ever since with no gurgling. ------------------ '83 SC |

Why are people so willing to put unknown crap on their Porsche? Esp. in line in the oiling system. Esp. based on NO reliable info.
I'm glad I was not born a car. |

Porsche recommends Mahle filters and installs them at the factory. K&N air filters are hype (I bit on it and now have a K&N air filter for sale) Why would you try an unknown, when Mahle filters have been doing the job - forever.

In the '70s, Purolator was the filter supplier, and the PC-260 was the OEM filter. The anti-drainback valve is irrelevant on the 911 engine, since it is the SCAVENGE OIL LINE that is being filtered! The pressure pump ALWAYS HAS A CONSTANT SUPPLY OF OIL VIA THE 'S-hose' ... from the oil tank!!!
