Momo steering wheel and hub difficulties

My original '75 911S wheel is coming unstitched at the top, so I thought I'd make a change to a Momo wheel. I was between a Heritage Prototipo and a black spoke Heritage Indy. Found a local Indy on marketplace so I went with that. Got the Momo L231 adapter from a seemingly reputable ebay source because shipping was fast, free, and there was a small coupon I could use. I want to believe the wheel is legit, but its manufacture date is prior to the use of the NFC tech in the wheels, so it's hard to confirm. I've never had another in hand but the box and paperwork all seem right. The hub adapter and box also seem good to me, although the seal sticker over one of the box seams had been removed and stuck on top before it arrived to me, so someone had clearly opened the box.

When I switched the horn ring contact from the base of the OEM wheel to the new hub adapter I noticed that of the 3 mounting screw and holes, only 2 on the hub lined up with the original part. Not a big deal, I thought, it wasn't a critical attachment, so I just used 2 of the screws. However, when I went to attach the wheel to the hub adapter after the adapter was mounted to the car, I had trouble getting any of the 6 allen bolts thread in. And I mean, they did not go at all. Turns out the holes in the hub to receive the allen bolts are NOT threaded. In addition, 2 of them are drilled at a skew and probably wouldn't properly receive a bolt even if they were threaded.

My conclusion is that this hub adapter is (severely) defective. Or am I missing something?

I have the Momo adapter with a Momo steering wheel in my 911. I also have a I also have an extension.

There are so many counterfeit parts on eBay and Amazon. Add in, the box was open, and it may have been returned because it was defective or somebody modified the adapter? Rather than tapping the adapter for the screws, I would return it. You don’t want the steering wheel in your hands when it rips out of the adapter at speed.

When I first installed the adapter and steering wheel, I was having a hard time pulling the steering wheel off, but finally got that fixed through on off repetition. The adapter seems crudely made.

My steering wheel was off center just a little bit and it was driving me crazy. A couple weeks ago, I took it back off and compared the turn signal ring to the factory wheel, and it was in the wrong position. I assumed it was at 12 o’clock, and it should be at 9 o’clock, and it was mounted with two screws. You might want to check that.

Once I did that, the steering wheel was centered, and now the turn signal cancels.

I am certainly aware of the replicas, many offered at severely discounted prices. I paid basically full retail price for the adapter and the prior owner of the wheel showed me his original receipt from Momo direct. The adapter is such a simple piece that it’s hard to believe the step of threading the holes would be completely skipped. I have already initiated the return process. Hopefully it’s a smooth one.

I wish all manufacturers were as good as Lego and Ikea. Any issues with their assemblies and I know for a fact that I’m the one who made a mistake (and usually a few pages back).

From the photo of the adapter holes, it looks kinda like someone ugga-duggaed the fasteners in the past, stripped the holes, and then just drilled them out. Is the hole about the thread pitch diameter of your fasteners, or big enough that they just drop in?

The holes are too small for the bolts, so probably not drilled out after stripping. I think they are close to appropriately sized to be tapped.

The retailer has filed a claim with Momo. We’ll see what they say.
