Carpet Fitting

Tomorrow im going to tackle fitting my carpet set, most of it seems pretty straight forward except for the two bits that go down the sills from front to back from test fitting this piece it seems like it will need quite a bit of shaping and im struggling to find a suitable place to start to get it lined up properly. Has anyone got any tips for fitting this piece of carpet and what’s the best point to start at?

Steve

I found it easiest to start at the front and work back. use just a bit of glue in a couple of spots at the rear so they can be moved/reposition if necessary. Start by gluing the front and work back, from the floor upwards. That way you get the most visible part (the front) positioned correctly. You can trim under the door sills if you end up with too much material there and the floor sections get covered by the floor mats.

Carpet Insulation...

Howdy,

I wanted to jump in here and ask if you use an underlayment before installing the carpet, if so on what parts. I've been told the the 3M foil sandwich insulation makes a good underlayment. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Whose carpets are you using? I just fit the appbiz in a ’66. Their set uses one piece from the “A” pillar jamb all the way to the rear wheel well; not all sets do. The material is lightweight enough that it will stretch. Start with the kick panel pieces first and then the threshold piece as it fits on top for a finished look. I ran the top of the threshold carpet piece level with the body seam that the sill fits over; that gave me a straight line to mate too, the metal threshold covers it and there was plenty of material to lap at the floor.

I haven't decided yet, I'm getting samples of the Silverknit which I've been told is closest to my "84". I like your carpets, but I think they're more appropriate to the early cars. It appears that you painted all the sheet metal prior to the carpet install? Looks great, well done...

when you start fitting your carpet outline the carpet with chalk and or the body so when you glue it you know where it should be and fitment of the carpet . use chalk lines when trimming to. when done wipe off with damp rag .

Instructions

We have a generic RS Carpet installtion guide that was prepared by one of our customers available. It shows the installation on a 69-73 Tub
Email me if you wish for me to email you a copy.

The OEM style sets are duplicates of the factory sets and we suggest you take lots of pics as you remove, for reference during installtion.

Carpet glue

We use contact cement made By DAP it can be sprayed brushed or rolled on.
It is not the water based stuff.
You can also use 3M #77 spray glue but its very pricy
