Turn Signal Trouble

The left turn signal indicator light on my 73T is not working correctly...it works correctly for the first flash, then on the second flash it goes slightly dimmer(but still flashes), and the right turn signal indicator flashes also. The right turn signal indicator functions as it should when the right turn signal is turned on. In addition, all exterior lights function as they should. I removed the turn signal relay and intend to purchase and install a new one, but I don't think that the relay is the problem, as the interior and exterior lights flash periodically as they should.

Could my problem be in the turn signal switch itself? I tried jiggling the handle, but this changed nothing. Anyone had this problem before? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Are you positive that (a) all bulbs are OK and (b) all ground connections to the light buckets are OK?

The Porsche blinker systems do bizzare things if a bulb is out anywhere around the car.

In my case I have had the relay go out at least once, which is a really easy fix but does cost $30-40 for the part.

Guys,

I have had similar experiences with indicators. My relay totally blew, so I replaced it with one that had the same part number, but was considerably smaller.

The unit works fine, but if you cancel the indicator manually, during a blink, both indicator lights on the dash flash. But not the actual signal lights on the car. Weird!

warment,
I had the same problem along with some others with my 71 911e. I ended up cleaning all of the grounds replaced the bulbs and replaced the Flasher. The flasher turned out to be one of my big problems. The emergency flashers worked fine but when I tried the signals I got the same results as you did. I finally replaced the flasher (which was 30 years old) and all is working great. But I would also do the other stuff.

I am going to order a new relay/flasher today. Another thing that is weird with my car is that the turn signal indicators do not flash at all when I have the emergency/hazard lights on. Could this be a sign that something is disconnected somewhere in the wiring system?

The previous owner did not know much about doing repairs, but he did them anyway. I have found numerous things that were connected incorrectly(like my license plate lights), so maybe something is backwards. My inspection died at the end of last month, and I need to get these indicators working correctly. Thanks for the tips.

Same thing happened to me using Jahn bulbs (I don't use the US bulbs, only Phillips or Jahn). The dual humps on the bottom of the bulb were different heights; by filing them to the same level the problem went away.

For what it's worth,

I had some problem with my turn signal lights, every time I turn them on the especific side would blink two or three times, then both lights would blink together.
I got the grounds cleaned behind the gauge and it works fine.

My mechanic, or should I say my father, fixed the problem. One of the left rear taillight bulbs was not making full contact to the terminal. I have a new turnsignal relay on order, so I am going to replace the old relay with the new one since the relay is a 28 year old original...

You guys hit the nail on the head! Thanks.

Also, yesterday I replaced my original turn signal relay with a new relay from Vertex Auto. The new relay was half the height of the original relay, but worked fine. Also, the new relay is a LOT more quiet than the original relay. I would highly recommend this update.
