77 S fuel system cleaning
After 15 years in storage I finally got it put together. Pulled the fuel tank plug and filter and it was full of varnish goop. Cleaned it and the feed path to the outside of the tank. My next plan is to pull the pump and clean it and replace any hoses and I think there is another filter at the tank outlet to clean. Then add carburetor cleaner to the tank with a small amount of gas and flush the lines with the fuel pump. My hope is that the big filter will catch the rest of the junk that comes through after I start it. Oh I will always carry a new filter and wrenches with me.
Any comments, suggestions or ideas? Thanks for the help. |

When you take out the fuel sending unit have a peek down there with the flash light. by the way my '71 has a plug to empty out the fuel in the bottom.
If it's pretty rusty in there you might want to pull the tank and either repair it or by a new one. I pulled mine about 7 years ago and took it to a local radiator repair shop. They cut it open, sandblasted and resurfaced it for $75.00. Haven't had any fuel problems since. I saw in the performance parts catalog that they sell new after market ones. I don't remember the price. Might want to check with our sponsor here first. Good luck, hope it's just old fuel. KevinS
