![]() ![]() Can anyone suggest where water might be penetrating my 88 Carrera cabrio. I have dried the mats out on several occasions, the water seems to be entering behind the dashboard even making my instruments steam up! The bonnet seal is in excellent condition. Could it be entering via the fresh air duct, the blower for this has since packed up. Please help!!!! |

I'd first suspect the windshield seal--has it ever been replaced? What you describe is typical of a leaking seal, though there are other possibilities as you've discovered.

It often comes in through the front window seal and flows under the dashboard pad onto the metal structure underneath. You'll usually see it drip from the area around the side dash vents. Look under the dash for evidence of water trails.

Also agree it could be the windshield. My glove box used to get soaked as well as the floor. Now I never put my ownership/insurance stuff in there anymore, even after fixing it.
You can test the fresh air intake with a hose on a dry day and see if that lets water in. It takes a steadier rain for water to seep in through the windshield.

windshield seal / bottom corners
Before the next outing in rain try and put some duct tape along those areas and see if that stops or reduces it. If so, answer is confirmed. very common. |

Window seal. You're lucky your car is galvanized. At least it may be (hopefully) galvanized on the metal under the dash pad & at the lower corners of the windshield. My '72 wasn't and when I took the windshield and dash pad out, there was a huge amount of rusted metal at the lower corners & the dash metal. I finally sold the body.

Check the fresh air intake. I used to have that problem when I washed my car on the upward slope of the driveway. I turned the car around so the nose points downward and problem solved although I think in your case with the instrument cluster getting wet it might be a bigger issue.

replaced my seal on my 81SC; had fingers crossed that I didnt encounter something like the pictures above.
Turned out to have just a little surface rust that easily sanded off (applied rust inhibiting primer afterward). Caught it just in time. Do it before it looks like the above. |

Soggy footwells
Many thanks to you all.
I took my Cabby to the body shop and they concurred that it was indeed a faulty windscreen seal. With the naked eye the seal looked perfect but a little lifting in the corners revealed little puddles of water. Hope I've caught it in time and thanks again for your Porsche knowledge. ![]() |
