Driver door adjustment question......
My driver door isn't quite "right" it catches just a little when I shut it. She's an '85 and I've had two others and they shut with the classic solid metallic thunk.
I did a search this must be a common question.......thanks guys. Scott

Hold the handle latch open and slowly push the door closed and see if it wants to rise up when it hits the latch. You will feel it hit too. If it does your pins may be warn out and the door is sagging a bit.

That's exactly what's happening it comes up just a bit before latching.......it bugs me and doesn't seal as well as it should. How do I fix this how do pins wear out do you mean that their diameter gets whittled down or bent?
Scott

First, see how your door gaps are if you can w/o interference from the strike plate. It may be that your hinges are worn, but you can shim them to raise the door if need be. Otherwise, just adjust the strike. It may take a few tries, so don't tighten the 12 pt. screws all the way until you know you've got it. Use an impact screwdriver with a 12 pt. bit to loosen them the first time. Mark your original strike position with tape or something for a reference.

It's got bushings, open the door and see if there is any play by moving it it up and down.

goggle "shimming door" to see how to adjust a house door and apply the same technique with thin metal shims on your car. You may find one or two already in there. A shim cut in half vertically and placed on the inside or outside of the vertical center line of the hinge leaf will also cock the hinge forward or back depending on which hinge you do this to, upper or lower.
Raising a door by replacing the hinge bushings and reaming them is a lot of work and requires special tools. The hinges have to be pretty bad to go to this amount of trouble. Last edited by milt; 02-15-2008 at 05:36 PM.. |

That's what's confusing me I quite naturally tried to lift the door from the bottom corner. Strangely it doesn't move at all no play so are shims the answer? Great idea using straight google for that.
