what size socket fits axle nut?

it's somewhere between a 27mm and a 32mm... anyone know?

The jombo lock nut on the 85's and up is a 32mm brute (mine is laughing at me right now). I can only guess that the castellated nut on the pre-85's is a 32mm socket also.

No, the axle nut socket was 30 mm from '63/64 ... 356SC, 904, and early 911 all shared the same rear brakes and hubs!

yup. looks like it's 30mm...

i had already tried the 32mm, cause my bentley manual said it was 32mm... basically wasted a trip to the tool shop. just picked up a 30mm replacement...

look out! there's grease a flyin'...

Anyone know the axle nut torque spec? Mine's a 1973 (now with 1974 arms/bearings)

Thanks!

Adam: Why are you removing the axle? I followed your thread on the CV joint replacement... what's the problem now?
regards,
jlex.

jlex-

no problems at all. looks like JerRed just pulled up this old post of mine from a search and wanted to get confirmation on the axle nut torque spec by posting a new reply to it. thanks for asking, though!

For those late 85 and newer cars with the later style axle shafts (shafts with the outer cv joint fixed to the wheel stub axle) the lock nut is definitely a 32mm socket size. This means the earlier style shafts have the 30mm size castellated nut as indicated by Warren and Adam.

Just trying to avoid any confusion.

Also, watch those later lock nuts. They'll eat your 1/2 in. drive extensions if they're Craftsman. Torque spec. is 460Nm/340 lb-ft. I broke two regular and an impact 6 in. extension (who cares, they're lifetime guaranteed) before wising up and going to 3/4 in. stuff with a 4 ft. length of pipe. Those lock nuts don't go down without a fight if you don't have the right tool.
