3.8 RSR Spoilers - What's the difference??
Hi Everyone,
I have a question regarding 3.8 RSR Spoilers. I have one for my car that the uprights of the spoiler are angled (wider at the front and more narrow at the rear) and others that I have seen seem to be more straight back? Whats the difference? Pictures below.... Straight back uprights. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1202320667.jpg And mine that the uprights and wing are more at an angle? See how the Carbon Fiber upper wing is at an angle.... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1202320785.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1202320828.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1202320972.jpg What's the difference? |
It looks like you have the 964 3.8RS style w/o scoops, sits lower also called 3.6biwing
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1202321774.jpg The 993RSCS style also used on RSRs has scoops and is taller http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1202321858.jpg |
So the 964 3.8RS wing is more angled then? Kind of makes it tough to add uprights with a raised wing then....
Is there any advantage to the angled style? Additional downforce or anything? |
Maybe narrow body vs. widebody? If aftermarket, it is possible that one is a modification to the original. Don't know which is original though.

I believe that the 964 3.8 blade has a fixed angle of attack, the wing in the very first picture ihas an aftermarket add on blade
the 993RSCS has a variable 4 position adjuster, 0*, 3*, 6* or 9* generating a net -119 to -713 n of lift(aka actual downforce) @ 270kph |
Bill,
I believe when he refers to angle he is referring to the 2 up-right portions of the wings. He is wondering why the width of the up-right is wider in the rear of the tail and narrower in the front on some examples. The black car above has it's vertical portions of the tail that are equal width apart when the front is compared to the back....while the gold wing is more narrow in the front and wider in the back. He is not talking about the angle of the wing-plane |

You guys are dead one, mine does change the shape (angle) as it goes toward the rear of the car. Wider in the front as the air enters and narrower in the rear as it exits.
So now the question is; would using a raised upper wing defeat the purpose of the narrowing affect of the original wing? The upper wing insert on my wing is adjustable for multiple angles of attack. |
IMO, the only reason to go with raised up-rights would be for serious track use. This would allow you to use a more efficient wing (longer span, thicker chord, better placement in the airstream, etc.). Keep in mind a set up like that is not cheap.
FWIW, I believe that wing only came stock on 2 cars: The 964 RS 3.8, and it's big brother the RSR 3.8, both versions being identical. You are probably just witnessing the difference between oem and aftermarket, or even aftermarket-to-aftermarket differences. |
