Pedal cluster problem
 

My 88 Carrera's sticking accelerator seems to be coming from the pedal itself; it also sticks at WOT which just led to some excitement this morning.

Pushing on the pedal with my hand, I can hear a "click" sound, which I've never heard before, and the pedal is reluctant to come all the way back. Is there an adjustment there? Can that rod be out of alignment or catching on something?

it should be pretty obvious once you pull back the carpets and pull off the wood floorboard.

Sounds like a bad, or broken, pedal bushing. Or perhaps a binding throttle cable?

I doubt that anything is bent very much. What I do suspect is that the bellcrank bushings are worn out or gone ... which causes excessive wear on the ball sockets! After you get the plywood fooring out, be sure to inspect the fit/play of the socket at the pedal pushrod end where it snaps on the bellcrank, and the socket for the throttle rod in the tunnel where it fits on the other end of the bellcrank!

It just goes to show ... German engineering goes awry for the littlest details ... the little ball that fits into the socket on the accelerator was not completely seated in the socket. I drove it over to the dealer and the tech rooted around for a few seconds, popped the pedal off, said, "There's the problem." He also noticed that my throttle was only opening 70 percent and adjusted it accordingly, so it was worth the trip, I suppose. The car woke up a little (more).
