Why do my blinkers work as if they have a mind of their own? 1968 with all electrics running fine, when I put signal to either side the blinker may flash once, then a few seconds pass and it might flash 2 or if I'm lucky, 3 times. There is no rhyme or reason to the pattern. It changes often and sometimes doesn't work at all. It really wouldn't bother me except that when I am making a left turn I get leered at and given the finger a lot. BTW..when I hit the hazard light all corners flash perfectly and in unison.
Thanks, Joe |

Joe,
A few days ago, my car had a similar problem...All exterior lights appeared to be functioning correctly, and my right turn signla indicator light flashed as it should on the interior. However, when I turned on my left turn signal, the left turn signal indicator would flash once like normal, but then on the second and third flashes, the left indicator became more dim and the right turn signal indicator flashed in unison with the left indicator light! I thought I had a bad relay(which by the way is located underneath the dash pad) and replaced it, but the problem turned out to be caused by a loose bulb in my front left turn signal assembly! I would take a look at all exterior bulbs and make sure they all are functioning as they should. I would recommend removing all of the lenses so you can really tell if everything is right. Did you order your oil line yet? Bill ------------------ William Armentrout 1973 911T 2.7 carerra rs specs www.geocities.com/william_armentrout |

Also, the left turn signal indicator would only work three times just like yours...

My '69 T does the same thing. ..blinks normal once or twice and then both signal indicators blink. I'll check for loose bulbs! Thanks for the tip.

David,
I also noticed that a few of my bulbs were corroded...I think it was because my turn signal and taillight seals were old and cracked and let moisture in. In addition, I replaced my turn signal relay with a new unit and it is much quieter than the original. It was also half of the height of the original, but worked just fine. Getting out the relay is really a two person job...one person to hold the bottom of the relay connector from the trunk, and the other person to reach through the oil pressure gauge and pull out the relay. Weird spot for a relay... Bill ------------------ William Armentrout 1973 911T 2.7 carerra rs specs www.geocities.com/william_armentrout |

Bill, when I hit hazard button the blinkers work fine so I thought it wouldn't be the bulbs??? BTW, my oil line seems to have dried up by the time I got home last night so I will drive it tonight and see if the oil had just drained out of the pipe or if by some miracle my leak has been faith-healed.

I've had exactly the same symptoms. For me it was caused by getting the turn signal relay slightly damp. Once the unit had a chance to dry out, it returned to working okay again.
The relay on my '73 is down by the fuse boxes, just up from the LH battery - I believe it is the lowest of the (upto four) relays positioned there. ------------------ Marcus '73 S Targa |

You need to replace the flasher with a new one. I would recommend the electronic ones, not thermal, which you can by for $6 at your local auto parts store. The thermal flashers wear out and loose their flashing abilities. As for both lights blinking on the dash, check and clean the connectors and grounds, grounds, grounds, grounds, and grounds. That should solve your problem.
