Door keeps popping open
Hi guys. My 911 (drivers side) keeps popping open while driving. I have to slam it at least 5-7 times. Is there an easy way to fix my door? Thanks.
|
Check the inside of the strike plate on door well. My passanger side is broken and need to be replaced. Right now I have to slam it hard to catch then when I open the door, it springs out very harshly.
I also noticed te 3 screws were loose where the latch is on the door it self. I've tightened them but no effect on the spring action or hard closing. Compare both Strike Plates inner plastic parts, mine were obviously broken. |
I had the same problem w/my early 911 Targa passenger door especially when the "Flexible Flyer" was traveling over a sudden hill, mound or bump at speed. My mechanic fixed it by adjusting the latch/strike on the door and either adding or replacing shims behind the striker plate. The door has never opened since.

Not to sound stupid but what is a strike plate? Where is it located? Thanks.
|
It is attached to the door jamb where the door latches to it.

This post just reminded me of high school days. I had a 73 914 with body cancer (rust) when I cornered hard the Passenger door would pop open. Man those were fun times! Thanks!

Popping door
Hi
My door is popping open after resto. Nothing is broken. A lot of parts have been replaced. It's a 68. Can anyone suggest what might be causing this issue? Thanks |
Could be as bad as a tweaked frame......previous damage to the door, sag due to rust.....
Don't ignore it. |
My drivers door was hard to get to close all the way ( wasn't popping open) So I replaced the strike plate. And got some improvement but still not right. Then opened the door card and did some cleaning and lubing of the inner workings. Boy, what a difference, the door now closes just like a Porsche is supposed to, the lock works better too.
The one regret that I had was that I used P B Blaster to clean and free up the parts. Then i wiped it (I thought) all out and lubed with other grease. Well I was smelling that Blaster odor for far too long. Whew that stuff stinks. Good luck in getting your s sorted. Cheers Richard |
The car is almost concourse and I'm confident it's not a flex issue.
I've lubed everything up as well. Very frustrating! I haven't replaced the strikers. They appear to be in good condition. Hmmm.... |
Rolls,
It pretty much has to be some kind of alignment issue. The latch in the door, the strike plate in the jamb, both have a lot of freedom of movement when loosened, and they need to be pretty precisely aligned to make sure 1) the door is well aligned with the surrounding panels when closed and 2) that it stays closed! If it's popping open my guess would be that the striker is too far inward, or the latch is too far outward, or both, and the latch is sitting too shallowly in the striker, so not really closing all the way. The angle of the strike plate is also adjustable (you can rotate it relative to the jamb), and door closure will also be sensitive to that. Time to start experimenting. Mike |
Hmm a previous post got me thinking. I sniffed around and notice that there is a very small amount of play when I lift the door up. Only a fraction but perhaps enough to allow it to pop open... Both hinge pins are sitting up by almost an inch. Do they need to be driven all the way in?
|
The door latch that strikes the plate when turned manually should have 2 clicks. Then pull the door trigger and it should unlock. If u only have one click then the mechanism in the door needs lub. Try your other door to see what the normal clicks should be. Good luck, Glenn

No, the hinge pins should stick out a bit. Do NOT drive them all the way in. The hinge pins are in bushings, the bushings could be worn out. Also, your door could a few millimeters out adjustment and it will cause issues. My car had all the body panels (doors and frame) in alignment with no out of spec gap BUT my hinges were sprung. The sprung hinges were causing a door closing issue with my car and/or popping open. The body shop that I work with applied their magic and got everything back into alignment. In my opinion, aligning and adjusting doors for proper operation is more art then science. Regards, Chuck |
There was a guy that posted about a neato torpedo, hinge pin extractor he made....

bushings
For the door bushings.... does anyone know if they are a simple press in arrangement. Or does the hings need to be reamed first?
Also, does anyone stock the correct star door screws? Looking at it there doesnt appear to be any evidence of bushings. And is this pin upside down? TIA http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320445520.jpg |
Likely the pin itself is worn....leave the fasteners alone. Extract the pin and inspect....replace if toast.

Door pins
Okay. Do the pin heads go on the top of the hinges, or on the bottom? I assume its the top but always best o ask
