Need info on Door Locks & Alarm Remotes
 

Hey Folks - I need some info. I just bought a '91 964 and it came with two remotes. The crazy thing is that one locks and unlocks the doors and then the other works the alarm. I went and saw the car before buying but it's in transit. Basically though, you had to have both remotes to lock/unlock the doors and then set the alarm. It's a factory alarm and I think everything related is original.

So I'm just hoping someone can shed some light on this and if I have to, or can, I would like to get one remote to both lock/unlock the doors and arm/disarm the security, that would be great. The car has the manual but the manual doesn't cover such options.

Sounds like maybe an original automatic door lock and an aftermarket alarm. You may have to replace the alarm with one that can lock/unlock the doors as well.

It may be possible to wire that aftermarket alarm in to the door locking system.

EDIT: IF it's aftermarket, what's the manufacturer and model number of the alarm system?

Well the reason I think it's an original alarm is because the lights are active and working in the door lock 'stem'. I can't imagine that an aftermarket alarm, or an aftermarket install, would include attaching those lights - I really don't know though, maybe it would. It of course had an original alarm because it has those stems in the first place and this was a one owner car and I don't know why she would switch out the alarm. The car was clearly garaged her whole life, thus kept pretty secure.

Perhaps, and I am just speculating here, perhaps there was a problem with the factory alarm, so an aftermarket one was installed, and wired in to the original lights. Another PERHAPS: Perhaps the central locking is aftermarket, and the alarm is factory? I think you'll need to do some searching to find the control units to find the real story.

If it was a one owner car, why don't you ask the PO?

On the owner - I bought it from a reseller, not the one owner who cut out all of her info on service records and books (obviously she didn't want to be known or contacted).

For researching, that's what this is all about and as mentioned, I don't have the car in my possession yet - it's in route from CA and I'm just trying to get a jump on the few known issues! The most help, and I do appreciate all input though, is if there is someone who has had a 964 with the factory alarm lend their knowledge. I'm just really curious to see if someone says, 'oh yeah, because it was an option, they had two different remotes' or, 'no, you should have one remote so something is up'. Maybe I just have to buy a new remote???

Common sense tells me there should only be one remote but the whole point is that I just don't know. The manual tells me nothing so I won't even know if I'm looking at a factory unit or aftermarket once I even get the car.
