Noise from Recent 915 Rebuild
I recently had my 915 partially rebuilt. Before bringing it to the shop, the 915 was perfect with the exception of a little difficulty (very minor but annoying) slipping into second gear. I trusted the shop to split her open and make recommendations as to what really needed replacing... about $1600 later, I have a very clean 915, the problem with second gear is worse, and now there is a pronounced rattling noise after she warms up, sitting in nuetral, and no pressure on the clutch. When I enage the clutch, the noise completely disappears. Some have said this is a sure sign of the throw-out bearing, but this doesn't compute. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the throw-out bearing is sitting idle and making no contact unless the clutch is engaged - right? Anyway, the clutch, pressure plate, and the thro-out bearing were also replaced during the 915 overhaul. The shop is telling me that it is probably the center bearing. This really pisses me off because they should have noted if it was worn when they had it split open and were makeing the recommendations to replace parts. By the way, the rattling noise appeared exactly 900 miles after the rebuild. Question is, could this be the throw-out bearing or not? If it is, I will bring it back to the same shop to get fixed. Otherwise I'll never take it backtothis job for ANY work because they are already trying to place the blame on another component and quoting the $$$ for repair.
While on the subject, can anyone recommend a good 915 rebuilder in the Los Angeles area? Torrance?
Thanks, love this list!
