Question How hot is hot???

Now that it is getting warmer I am seeing my 88 930 climb to temps it never reached in the winter. On the temp gauge, how hot is hot?? Their are 3 white ticks and then the red zone...Where does most people car run at during the summer months? I thought it was supposed to be around the second white tick from the bottom, but I seem to be between the top white mark and the second to the bottom (exact midle of the gauge). Any input??

Thanks,

Jim

Thumbs up

I also have an 88 930, and my temp gets a little higher than than the halfway mark on the gauge. On the track or autocross course, it will get to about 3/4. I think I've read in B. Anderson's book (or maybe in his tech notes in Excellence) that this is acceptable.

Hot is when your engine overheats, won't restart, and you have to roll to the parking space on a PCA trip to the mountains (all caused by a stupid person blocking the Porsche traffic, Rrrrr). However that as then, now my engine is rebuilt and runs at about 210 in 110 weather.

there's no doubt a hot engine over an extended period of time will reduce engine life...

however, unless you're in the red, I wouldnt be worried for the time being....I have an 83 sc and on a hot day (which was last summer), my gauge reaches half way also.

if we get a hot summer, I'm installing a fan on the front oil cooler.

you may want to do the same to your turbos to see cooler temps...there are actually quite a few articles on engine cooling from Pelican Parts tech articles

Selma Hayeck in "From Dusk to Dawn"-now that's hot.

Catherine Zeta-Douglas looked pretty smokin' too in "Zorro"....

Twice as hot as half-way hot.

If your eyes are younger than mine, you may be able to read the calibration values in the gauge. They are hidden by the gauge frame, so you'll havge to look into the gauge at an angle (from the passenger area). Probably easier at night with the dash lights on.

The values will be in Centigrade. You will find something I found disappointing. Your engine is too hot BEFORE you get to the red. the red part is WAY, WAY too hot. I forget the actual values, but on mine, the last white tick is already too hot.

See this thread for more info on the "little numbers" on the temp gauge:
