I have been working all weekend to get this done. As with everything, I thought I would be able to do it in less time than it actually took but I am really happy with the results. Here are the before and after shots.
I am going to do the floor in black & white 12' linoleum tiles as soon as I get rid of the junk in the corner. ![]() ------------------ Tom Sharpes 90 C2 Targa http://members.rennlist.com/myc2 |

Tom,
Post some picks with the black and white tiles. I was thinking of that too. But I was also thinking of a 3 foot stripe across the font of the floor instead of solid. Sort of a finish line approach because I'm worried about dentin, or cutting, the vinyle tiles with jack stands. What kind of tiles are you going to use? ---------------------- Paul 78SC Targa |

Paul - I like the finish line idea ! I might even get crazy enough to spell out FINISH and put it in the stripe.
![]() Oh, by the way - there is no wife so I can do as I please ! ![]() ![]() I am going to keep checking around for opinions on the tiles. I have talked to a couple of places that say there is no problem in using them. If I were going to use the METALLICA jack or jack stands I would put down a piece of plywood or something. I looked into epoxy painting, but that is really expensive and there is a lot of prep work before you ever get to painting and I talked with a couple of people that said they did it right and it still peeled. At least with the squares if you mess one up you can replace it pretty easy, I'll let ya` know what I find out. ------------------ Tom Sharpes 90 C2 Targa http://members.rennlist.com/myc2 |

While my garage is not nearly as cool as yours, I might offer an idea that had proven to be worth its weight in gold. I carpeted my garage!
![]() I know what you’re thinking, but the good outweighs the bad big time. I went to Home Depot and purchased some remnant, dark gray shag, got some double-sided sticky tape and threw it down. I left about three feet of floor bare (actually painted) close to the door for easy cleaning. I cannot tell you how comfortable this makes working on the cars. WARM even on the coldest days, and if you have heat, it seems to make the garage stay warmer for a longer period of time. All year it is soft and makes crawling around so much more pleasant. The jack and the creeper roll easily and the jack stands take a very firm bite. I had an old vacuum cleaner already, so I designated it to the garage. I also keep a light blue tarp rolled up in the back of the garage to put out when I change oil etc. I vacuum once a week and while it still gets a little dirt, you cant beat the feeling of stepping out of your car onto plush carpet. When folks come over for the first time and see the garage, the long low whistles make life worth living!!! ![]() |

Carpet is an interesting and comfortable option, but it really depends on what kind of work you actually do in the garage. I previously had a garage, wall to wall carpet indoor/outdoor with thin carpet pad. No shag, very short, dense fibre.
Several things made the carpet less than optimal. - minor, unexpected spills, oil bad, fuel potential disaster. - metal filings from grinding, sanding, or cutting. - hot work, welding, heating, drop light laying on floor. - washing the car in the garage. For the above reasons - I have planned on using remants which are stored rolled up when working around or under the car. One thing if you are looking at lifts. Depth or ceiling height (or combination) are critical. Should be able to open the door with the car on the lift. I want to be able to park under it. Alan 83 SC (garage doors not hung yet) |

I forgot to mention two important things. I did in fact scotch guard the carpet to make cleaning a little easier, and I have an engine sized piece of wood that protects the carpet from drips etc. I do not know how to weld and I use a florescent light, so fire isn’t much of a concern. Don't in home carpets have to fire retardant anyway?
I have had no fuel smells (or leaks for that matter) on the carpet. My nose would surly know right away. When I do fuel work like that, I just pull the car outside. I wonder if the carpet helps protect the tires from flat spots at all??? [This message has been edited by VIPRKLR (edited 03-27-2001).] |

Did you do the floor yet?
I'll be working on mine this weekend and could use some inspiration, please post a pic if you did the floor. ------------------ Daryl 91C2 Targa |

Actually I am waiting for two things.
My tax returns. I am doing a test on some linoeum tile squares I bought. I put them so that when I pull into the garage the tires are on them. So far, so good. No problems. There are definately stuck down good and tight. They haven't lifted even when the tires are real hot from my drive home. I have to say this will look great when done though ! ![]() ------------------ Tom Sharpes 90 C2 Targa http://members.rennlist.com/myc2 |

If you live in an area with a homeowners association, you likely have a CCR prohibiting using carpet in the garage. For a variety of reasons.
Also, what happens when you park the cars in the garage after driving in the rain, etc.? Doesn't the carpet get all wet and yucky? Seems like it would be hard to keep clean in the garage. I'm always spilling "stuff" everywhere! |

Tom,
I just started tiling my garage floor - black and white. About 25% done. The look is very impressive. What tiles are you using? I got mine from Lowes at the Tustin Market place. So far so good, even with the small drops oil. Really gives the washer dryer a racing look, too. I figure even if one wears out I can just pull it an replace with a new tile. I did use a muratic acid to clean the garage floor in spots where the previosu owners cars had leaked. I'll post picks soon as I get a free digital camera from Toshiba due to a class-action settlement. -------------------------- Paul 78SC Targa |

Two things
First, Nick L, Why would the HOA care what you do inside your garage ? Second, PBeeb's, I am still in the test stage - code for waiting for my freaking tax returns !!!! When are you going to be done ? I have all next week off. Maybe I come down to your plav\ce and check it out ! I got my "test units" at Home Depot. They are Armstrong tiles. Not bad at .93ea. I can't wait to do this . When I put them down they really look nice. So, does this mean there is a JACK painting in your future ?? ![]() Are you on the list for the garage tour ? And are you going on the Heathen Run Sunday ? By the way check out the cabinet pull knobs ! What do you expext with a guy that has a flamed jack ?? ![]() ------------------ Tom Sharpes 90 C2 Targa http://members.rennlist.com/myc2 |

I bought my car from a really classy hi end used car place in Rochester, NY. They had the best, most unique floor I had ever seen. Was made of some kind of gray plastic honeycombed material. You could actually wash the car on it (inside) and all the water would drain thru to the concrete floor below & drain away. That floor looked immaculate. Best garage floor I had ever seen.

Don't know why they do, but they seem to care about a lot of things that leave me scratching my head.
Anyways, have lived in a few places with HOA rules, and the "no carpet in garage" clause was in all of them. Seemed like a standard provision in the standard form that HOA's use. I think its because its a potential fire hazard. Leaking stuff, hot cats, etc. May also be an aestetic thing, and also a way to prevent people from using the garage as an office or living space. Dunno, though. BTW, how many tiles do you need for a 2 car garage? [This message has been edited by Nick L (edited 04-13-2001).] |

I have a 20x20' garage so if I did my math right it should be 400 of them @ .89 ea (they're on sale this week)= $356.
That's not bad for the look and nice floor you get. |
