'71 Blinker Stalk Install

OK. I just got my aftermarket Blinker Stalk Assembly today courtesy of our host for my 1971 911 T. So it looks like I have to remove the steering wheel to install. Any other helpful hints anyone can give?

Kevin,

You will need to remove the steering wheel and some stuff inhte steering wheel housing plus the two clam shells halves.

Things to watch out for?

Do not use the steering wheel lock to hold the steering wheel when you break the steering wheel nut loose.

Be care ful with the clam shell. Mine had 6 attachment points, 4 under the wheel and 1 one each side.

When you pull the individual wires off of the headlamp switch, do it one at a time and replace them one-for-one with the new wires. Some advocate cutting and splicing the old harness. I say no, why ask for trouble from a bad splice.

I believe Waynes 101 Projects book lists this project. If you do not have the book, you should get it.

Harry,

Thanks for the tips, especially on the clam shell halves, it's always diffucult finding all the nuts, bolts and clips on the interior parts. I've pulled the steering wheel several times and didn't have any problems. I have put an aftermarket wheel which requires a puller to get off, my old one would slip right off after getting the nut off.

Kevin

I need to do the same thing to my '71 T as well. Please keep us posted as to how you go.

Is the new part the same to look at as the original one?

Cheers, Cam

Cam,

I decided to let the local shop install the new aftermarket blinker stalk I ordered from our host. I stopped by the shop today and he already had it installed. It looked great and would take a trained eye to tell it wasn't original. I'm still having the tach repaired and hopefully will pick up tomorrow. Anything else you want to know drop me an email.
