Post 993 lookalike

Lots of older 911s have been updated to look like a 964, but has anyone gone all the way and produced a 993 lookalike?

Mark -- I think with that engine that you're putting into that light weight body, you'll blow the doors off of any REAL 993. Turbo's included. What's your current status?

Bar, you sound pretty definite about that!

Let's look at it another way, would the 993 front wings etc fit an earlier car, such as a 964?

I'm drooling a lot... Nice website, too.

One thing that confuses me, Mark, you say you replaced the front end with that of an SC, so how did you end up with the 993 look?

Can't wait to see the finished job; that'll be after the Easter hols, then?

Cheers

I wonder when someone will try a 996 look on an early car. Those funky headlights would probably cover the hole left when you rip the horn grills out ...

Sure, people have done it.
You can see the ads for "993 Kits" in Excellence, etc.
I think Excellence has profiled some highly modified earlier 911s with "993 bodies", as I recall.

Phil

There was a car at Highclere (PCGB meet) two years ago which was done up like a 993 so it is possible and the parts are available in the UK. I'll try and get details oevr the weekend

Phil, the SC front end was only for the structural metal part (see webpage). The fendors, front bumper, etc are all 993 stuff.

Bar, why do you say no?

Thanks Mark. Are they genuine 993 bits or replica? If the former, did they bolt straight on?

The 993 conversions are FAR from bolt ons! Even if you use factory parts, you will need to do a lot of fabrication and bracing. There are a lot of them out there, most are done poorly...very few hold up over time.

I can't remember one thing that was "bolt on" and didn't need refined fit/finish.

I appreciate it'd be complex to fit 993 parts to an early 911, but what if one was to use a 964 as a starting point?

Cheers

Starting with a later car than I did (70) would be easier in my opinion. I wanted a pre 73 because I didn't want to have to deal with smog issues. I also wanted to keep the total cost of the project within reasonable limits.

Starting with a 964 will not make this project easier since you will still need to replace the full rear quarters, fabricate all of the front trunk latching section, modify rear deck mounting points, tailight buckets, center reflector mounting panel, bracing, etc. Also notice that the 964 has rocker panels which when removed have recessed areas for mounting tabs.

If you are going to do this project, buy a cheap (rust free) roller. Since the value of this car will be far less than you spend on it, you are better off making the minimum investment with the starting chasis. Also remember that the condition of the wings, bumpers, deck lid, hood, rockers doesn't matter since you get rid of these parts (you need the shell and the doors).

Here is a place in West Palm, FL who does these conversion, give them a call http://www.paulsexotics.com/price993.html

COMPLETE FIBERGLASS BODY KIT $3,400
-Complete front clip including 2 fenders & bumper

-Complete rear clip including side rockers & bumper
INSTALLATION - ROUGHED IN/SECURE $2,500
PAINT CLEAR COAT PPG 2000 $2,500
WHEELS - Replica of Original $1,800
COMPLETE 993 FRONT & REAR LIGHT KIT $950
CABRIOLET CONVERSION FOR TARGA $1,900

I would also give Carmen BMWPORSCHE@aol.com a call. I know that he converted a 965 Turbo to a 993 Twin Turbo body (the owner had so much money in the car and wanted to update the body). All of the work was with factory parts, and done correctly!

I am not an advocate of fiberglass rear quarters since they are so large and often times difficult to properly brace. As a result, on a street car, they will show their age over time.
