Rough idle after installing Jacobson Wires
I recently tuned my 74' CIS 2.7 . The last thing I did was install a set of Jacobson Electronics's wires. After that the car ran very rough and wouldn't idle. I checked all the connections, but still couldn't get it to idle or run well. I reinstalled the OE wires and it runs fine.
I noticed that the both banks of the OE wires are grounded to the coil mount where as the Jacobson wires are not. Could this grounding issue cause this problem? I remember I tried installing platinum plugs in this car one time and got kinda the same rough idle issues. My mechanic at Kahlers said that these cars "just didn't like platinum plugs and reinstalled the Super plugs which resolved the issue that time. Do I need to change or modify some other component in my CIS ignition system to use aftermarket wires? Or have folks had better results with OE wires/plugs on stock ignition systems? It seems to run fine with the OE stuff installed. I searched the forums but didn't come up with anything related to rough idle with these wires. Any advice or insight would greatly be appreciated. Thanks. |
When you had the Jacobson wire on the engine, you should have pull the wire one by one off the dizzy to see which cylinder was not firing, from there you would have isolated the problem to that cylinder and wire. Could be a bad wire or bad connectors.
I have Magnecor wire on my 82 SC with no problems. |
Wear heavy gloves while doing that.:D

I believe if you do a search on this forum for Jacobs wires you'll get your answer..................................you won't like the answer.

Is it at all possible that you had 2 crossed?

Check the sequence again. |
I'm confident that the wires weren't crossed , because I removed them one at a time and replaced the original ones in the same manner. I think it's just the wires. After searching the forum more (under the right brand name---Jacobs, Apparently I went brain dead and for some reason thought they were "Jacobson") It appears that other folks have had similar issues. Guess, Dad was right again, "If it aint broke dont fix it." I'll just stick with the OE stuff.
