Oil vent to carb intake necessary?
I have always had a connection from my oil tank to my Weber intakes. However, I was searching for ideas on how people have mounted their twin MSDs and twin coils (have twin-plug distributor on the way!) and noticed on this pic that the tank hose that usually goes to the carb intakes goes directly to the overflow tank.
I plumbed my track car similarly, such that the tank vents directly to the overflow tank. For strictly performance applications where emissions inspections aren't done is there any benefit either way? Here's the twin-plug example I was noticing. Mine has a hose from the oil tank, to both intakes, and then T'd off to a small overflow tank. ![]()

I don't see why not. To the extent that vacuum is used to drive the oil vapor through the separator, and prevent evap emissions by re-burning oil vapor, I can understand. However, there are other ways that oil vapor can be prevented from entering the environment, e.g. a filter on the vent from the overflow tank.
Remember: oil has an octane rating of ZERO.

Thanks John. That was my thought process...if THE LAW isn't involved, why allow a zero-octane fluid or vapors into the intake?

"Remember: oil has an octane rating of ZERO."
Yes, but unburned hydrocarbons (via blowby) have an octane rating and contributes to air pollution. That's why all positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) systems are closed loop. The usual vapor flow sequence is oil tank > catch can > air intake. The engine shown above vents to atmosphere. I would suggest venting to the intake system - a bit cleaner for the atmosphere. Here's mine: a hose (red) from the catch can vents to the bottom of each air filter mount. ![]() Sherwood |

Hi Sherwood,
We have similar setups, I just swapped out my engine for a 3.0 and am dropping in a twin-plug dizzy from JB Racing. Our Webers, filters, old dizzy, fuel reg and gauge, coil holder and hose colors are (were) all the same!

All I need are .3 more liters, 6 more plugs and a 12-place distributor, then I'll feel more adequate. ![]() take care, Sherwood |

Ha! The 2.7 I just dropped out of mine is what I was referring to.
