hello everyone, my name is miles im a first time poster here. I recently bought a 1980 porsche 911SC. A dream come true. :D I was wondering if E-10 unleaded gasoline would be compatible with it. Dealer said its fine for regular unleaded but i forgot to ask about e-10 (its about 30 cents cheaper than regular unleaded here :eek:)

Welcome! Spend the extra money for real gas while you can. E-X will have adverse effects over time on our cars.

As long as you do not experience detonation, which you will probably not on the street, regular gas should be fine. Any ethanol will be bad for the fuel system. It, being polar molecules, can dislodge the deposits from the years of non-polar hydrocarbon molecules running through it.
If you upgrade the motor in the future with higher compression or want to advance the timing, you will need to twin plug and run higher octane gas. |

wow you guys are quick :D thank's for the info. so far I've only used 91 octane.
ill post some pics as soon as i can. 117,XXX miles when i bought it, about 119,xxx now immaculate interior, no oil leaks doesn't burn oil. rides like a dream! |
No oil leaks. That is different in a car that old. Stay away from ethanol if possible. Your fuel system will thank you in the long run.

Welcome to Pelican and congrats. I am also new here. There isn't a project I've done, which is actually quite a few for someone that didn't ever work on cars, that I haven't had help from the great people here. But before you get shunned like a rabid dog you bess post a few pics of your baby!!!

ill have her cleaned up this weekend and ill take some pics for you guys. this one is a cell phone pic. not great quality but its a start. (dont mind the 02 GMC sierra.... that's my dads haha)
got a little chip in the right fender - - crappy touched up paint(not noticeable from 10ft, maybe the size of a quarter) a little ding on the sunroof, and the usual rock chips in the front..... not sure what car that has been driven 100k miles doesn't have these... heck on the drive home from denver, people in Lexuses and other porsches were havin a look ;) i believe it is the original paint, and the garage floor under it is dry so I'm pretty sure nothing is leaking..... at least to the ground anyway. dipstick has stayed the same the 2000 miles I've driven it so I'm confidant it doesn't burn or leak... maybe just not enough to notice because i hear they ALL leak. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1203304349.jpg |

just curious, but y'all getting decent gas-mileage with your SCs?:confused: cuz i hate to say it, but i expected better. - - but perhaps not having a working cruise control might throw it off a couple mpg.
i got 23 on the way back from Denver at about 80mph, and so far, with mostly in-town driving I've gotten 16-19mpg.... that about average? |

Congratulations, looks like a great car.
Not to start a sideline discussion on your thread, but I run 87 octane in my '83 SC without any signs of detonation. The stock compression (9.3:1) ratio for these engines allows you to run regular fuel - that's why your manual recommends regular BTW. It won't hurt to run higher octane (other than in the wallet), but I don't think it is necessary or beneficial in any way other than providing peace of mind. Good luck, Gordo |
Nice looking car and welcome to the board. I use Chevron Techron 92 Octane. I know I don't "need" to, but my baby likes it. Regarding milage, I get about 25 on the highway, and about 18 or 19 mpg city. I could probably get more if I could keep my foot off that pedal.

oh... thats sort of a relief on the gas mileage. :cool: all of our stations with 87 octane are e-10... 85 is regular gas, 91 is regular gas. i got some 85 octane and put some of that octane booster stuff in it ($1.50/bottle... figured i'd try it) - - if it gets me up to 91 octane its cheaper than paying for a full tank of 91... :D
haha i have a hard time keepin my foot off the gas too. driving a '70 VW beetle then changing over to this... talk about satisfying :D |
hootch in the tank will not harm anything but you will have to bring the go pedal a bit closer to the floor board to get where you want to go when you want to be there - which will also provide more exhaust and make you burn more juice. So I guess the only ones who benefit from the hootch in the tank would be the guys that grow the grain and make the mash.

I'd recommend non-ethanol, if you can get it. I run E-10 in cars I've had since new, but I'd be hesitant in an older car for the reasons mentioned (never designed with ethanol in mind, can clean out a lot of gunk). If you do decide to use it, be sure you change the fuel filters frequently...at least for a while.
And while a lower-octane might be sufficient for highway cruising, you never know when you're going to put your foot into it. So I'd err on the side of higher-octane or boosters. The other thing to remember is that you will bet lower mileage on any ethanol blend...just not as much energy as "pure" gas. |
Got another question - - was wondering if a Cat bypass would be a good idea for some cheap ponies? i don't really feel like shelling out thousands for a quality exhaust..... if its a good idea which pipe should i get? or should i just straight pipe it? i don't want it sounding obnoxious though....

Most have enjoyed the cat bypass....I did before going to headers. The Fabspeed is probably the nicest, that's the one I had. There some school of thought that a straight pipe isn't quite the same. Won't be obnoxious, a little throatier.

I run a cat bypass. Nothing noticeable in hp gains, but it sounds better. Anytime you free up the exhaust flow its a good thing. BTW I use a Bursch with o2 bung, which gets plugged in for smog testing only.

Be careful of that. Octane booster won't raise your octane level that much. Apparently the point they refer to on the bottles is acually .1 point. If you search this, there is a lot of available info. Your car looks nice. Maybe you can buff out that quarter sized paint repair. Also, although your car required only 87 when new, it's possible, maybe even probable, that as it ages, the engine requires slightly higher. |
second on no octane booster. I run 87 or 89 on my sc, no issues, but I would not run 85-ever. Also, as stated, the octane boosters are not generally effective. Given your choices, I would run 91 to avoid the e-10. Alot of our gas out east also has either e5 or e10, I have not found any problems with my two 911 sc's during the last 5 yrs, and maybe 25k miles.

Nice car, enjoy it on those deserted Nebraska roads. Just look out for the tractors, harvesters and 75 million head of cattle. You can use whatever octane the manual specifies; assuming it's not a high-compression engine, 87 octane should be just fine. Some say ethanol is OK, others say it is no good - you will get better mileage with straight gas, however. If you can find a Chevron station, you get the Techron for free. They are scarce here in Eastern Iowa. Have fun and remember: -Brake in a straight line -Don't lift off the throttle in a turn -Please DO wind it up to 5k in 2nd though 4th gears -You're not going to get that silly grin off your face for a long time. Ive seen close to 15 MPG, 23 downhill with a tailwind, maybe, please send me your gas saver tips. Then again my car is a two speed....

I think my car is running rich and I have all the equipment to adjust it properly now, but have not getten around to it yet. You may want to take it in somewhere (or find someone who can help you) and make sure your mixture is set right... Of course, being that the car is new to you, if you do not know for fact the last time it had general maintenance, you should probably do what most here call a baseline and change all fluids, filters, plugs, cap, rotor, possibly wires, etc... Oops. OK< I see you are in Nebraska now... western part I assume since you referenced Wymoing. My dad's family settled the central and and east central parts of NE in the early 1800's (Seward, Grand Island areas)...

Im thinking i will go with the Bursche cat bypass pipe w/ the O2 sensor($165), much cheaper than the fabspeed($275)... anyone have a sound clip of a stock muffler w/ the cat bypass on an SC? all the vids on youtube i've found also have an updated muffler....
