Quick, Easy Tire Sizing Question.
 

Simple question: What are the correct size tires for the following size rims?

16X6
16X7
16X8

I have one set of ROH rims, in 16x7 and 16X8, fitted to my car, with 205/55 and 225/50, respectively.

I have a new set of polished Fuchs I'd like to use this summer, though. Can I put my existing tires on there?

Porsche used to put 205/55 and 225/50 on 6x16 and 7x16 Fuchs. Same tires work fine with 7x16 and 8x16.

your 205 and 225 tires are the factory spec size for the 16x7/8 wheels on my '79

Cool. I guess I can either put my AVS Sports on those rims with no contact patch compromise, then, or even just throw some different tires on there.

Couldn't I theoretically put larger tires on the 8" rims?

And if anyone has any polished 8" rims - let me know.

I put 245/45s on the 8" rears to get a little less oversteer tendency. My '79 is a lowered euro, no fender rolling or other fiddling, not a bit of clearance problems.

I've got 245/45s on the 8s on the back of my car, too. Even though 225 is more correct for that size rim, I rationalized that sidewall flex is more of an issue on the front of the car, where there's less weight helping with traction, and more of the actual turning work is getting done. Up there, I put 205s on the 7-inch rims.

(Of course, if 225s had fit on the front of my car, I'm sure I would have come up with a rationalization for mounting those, as well.)

By the way, why the heck do rims come in 1-inch (25.4mm) increments, while tires come in 20mm (.8-inch) increments? This strikes me as the automotive equivalent of the 8-buns-versus-10-hot-dogs (or whatever the number is) grocery shopping paradox. Are there metric-sized rims sold outside of the US?
