Found HP!!

Ok,

So after 18 mos I finally bought a second SC to do a back date RS clone. I had been looking for a roller and found this one for a little more than what most were wanting for a roller. 1980 SC

I did not do a PPI- figured I could tell about the body and I planned on rebuilding the engine anyway.

So when I test drive it the gas pedal did not seem to have much of a throw and the car did not accelerate as promptly as my 79 does.
I buy it drive it home and it rides very good has a rebuilt 915 in it so it shifts super smooth.
As soon as I get home I hop into my 79 and drive it and find out that the pedal throw in the 79 is much greater. After looking at the tranny and the pedal cluster I have my GF hit the throttle and watch the action at the TB. I watched the same thing in the 79 and it was obvious the throttle on the 80 was going about half way. Low and behold at some point the car had some work to the CIS system and upon reassembly someone used too long of a screw on the bracket that has the cruise control on it. I backed it out and got a correct length one and wow what a difference. Car now screams out of the hole.

I wonder if the previous owner had it like that the entire time and never knew.
Anyway was fun and thought I would share it with the board. I ripped the AC off of it yesterday.

This is what it is parked next to now.

Phil

Phil-

PM me if you need any help with the project. I'd like to get my hands dirty on a project like that and could use some wrench time to hone my skills.

Sounds like a governor to me. Father trying to slow down a lead footed Son?

Cheers

Joey,

Thanks for the compliment!
It is euro height on the silver one. The wider wheels make a huge difference in my opinion. I will be dropping the Red one by the weekend. Not sure about adding wider wheels on it just yet though.

A couple of folks have asked about helping out and that sounds like a plan to me. I will button it up for some regular use and start buying the parts (Ducktail is on the way) and once the real work starts I will post and maybe we can all get together and have some fun.

As the above poster said, I half thought it was a governor as well, but the owner was in his late 40's maybe 50's. I honestly think it had been like that the entire time he had it, according to the records he never had anything done with the CIS but the original owner did.

What color does that red look to you guys? I will pull the paint code but it does not appear bright enough to be Guards red.

I found a code in the owners manual that says Malaga Rot and I searched and found a few 914's painted that color. I was going to paint it white, but the color has grown on me.
Here is a shot of my helper pulling out the AC, we had a blast this weekend!

looking good, isnt it amazing how easy it is to work on these cars! Also, wait until you get those heavy bumpers off and a few other things, it will really wake up!

How did you get rid of the coolant in the A/C lines?

Isn't it true that most cars in which the a/c doesn't work is a result of the refrigerant being gone?
