I need to get my drivers seat lower....much lower. A little background, I am 6’ 7”. I moved the seat back, I put in a smaller Momo steering wheel for knee room and I first cut some foam out of the stock seat and finally installed a Recaro seat. All to get more room and everything helped, a half inch here a little bit there but my head is still higher than my roll bar! Without helmet!
About a year ago someone wrote about changing the seat rails for one from a motorized seat (mine an 84 Cab-- electric seats came in when? 87?) anyway, I searched but couldn’t find the thread. I am about ready to bolt the seat to the floor, how much will this get me? I’ve owned the car 3 years and nobody has driven it but me. Make a nice excuse too “Sorry, I’d like to let you drive the car, but the seat is bolted to the floor” I don’t plan on selling it but you never know the future. Maybe my widow will have to sell it. Also the roll bar has about 2 inches from the convertible top, when it’s up. I need those 2 inches, should I get a custom bar made and sell my Autopower which I’ve never installed? Someone suggested that I will have to make a roll bar that I just bolt in on track days and take out if I want to put the top up. Tell me it’s not true. I don’t need suggestions for another half inch. I need 3” minimum 4” is better. My lot in life. All help appreciated, all jokes tolerated. Thanks and regards -Andy [This message has been edited by Andy Snow (edited 04-16-2001).] |

Remove two vertebrae from your spine. That should do it. Seriously, maybe you can have a fab shop make the top portion of your roll bar extendable. It would be very difficult to lower the seat any further.

3-4 inches is a lot to get. I think you're not only looking at bolting the seat to the floor, you might also need to do some custom welding to drop and strengthen a bracket that still attaches to the mounting points, which are higher than the floorpan (and --importantly -- much stronger than the floorpan). If you've got a DME under the seat, you'll have to move it.
I think you're also looking at some pretty signifivant surgery on the seat itself, cutting and re-welding the outside lower edges of the bolsters. I just had two seat brackets cut and re-welded to drop the seat mounting point 3/4 of an inch, and that was about the limit for these seats, given the overall width at the base of each seat. Of course, the best thing is to find someone else who's 6'7" and been down the road. Racing bucket, maybe, and a willingness to cut the floorpan. ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T (3.6) sunroof coupe jackolsen@mediaone.net |

I know how you feel I'm up there (about 5'18")
![]() I have a sunroof coupe and my head hits the roof without a rollbar. The only thing I can suggest is actually welding the seating brackets lower or going with a proper race seat. The recaros are nice but depending on the model, not much better than stock sportseats (also made by recaro). Try one of the molded fiberglass seats (the race type). Sometimes they'll drop you lower. Good luck and keep me posted. Adam Roseneck ------------------ 1978 911SC 3.0 roseneck@cyberbeach.net |
