Bob at APPBIZ here, the carpet set shown is an RS set. we do have standard sets available in all materials for those of you that don't wish to give up your rear seats.
Appears the set shown in the car is our lightweight charcoal plush, The perlon is a bit darker and is a flat felt product.
He also had us perforate the speaker areas on the door panels.
Bob
P.S. You did a terrific job on the install!

Yes he did, he has a steamer (which I will borrow for the next one) :-)

I see I did the front qtrs wrong on mine now too, I thought the large vinyl was on the out side, looks better under the side rocker piece.

Next stage is backdating the dash trim. I have ran into a couple of glitches. The side next to the steering wheel went ok, BUT

What do folks do with the padding that the switches ,mount in above the radio.
I have read where some folks have cut the padding and tucked it behind the aluminum, but that is not appearing to work. What would it take for me to make it look like a 73. I am not really in need of the rear defroster switch. I also need to switch the vent controls.

Phill, What did you do with the gas flap pull?

I did not put it back yet, it will go where it was.

You can fairly easily backdate your dash face to 73 earlier. You will need to source the following parts from a 69-73 model. Some guys have a lot of this stuff laying around from projects, race cars, etc..

1) ignition switch cover and washer- this will screw right onto your existing switch. Though the later cars have black key caps on the switch, this is a minor detail that can be overlooked. I would NOT sand off the coating that is on this "button" because you can introduce debris into the key lock assembly= Bad
2) aluminum base panels 4 pieces. Left of column, right of column, glove box door, and final small triangle on passenger side. These plates are fine if the vinyl is missing, as you can find vinyl that is complimentary to the rest of the interior. Note that the plates have a small reverse slot on the top/bottom edges that allow you to cut the vinyl slightly oversize. This helps secure the vinyl when glued down
3) fan control assembly- 69-73 of course, and get it complete with the cables. Clean and lube the cables, clean the contact wipe surfaces for the fan speed, and it just plugs into the same connector as the later unit.
4) Detail item- the 69-73 used chromed bezels for the switches. These bezels are meant for surface mounting whereas 74 up are inset into the foam. The install will look more finished if you find these
5) switch knobs- though the later ones will work, the old skool look is better finished with the early knobs and logos.

Foam removal
after removing the switches, fan control, turnsignal/wiper switch covers (for complete access to the base metal of the dash) you will also have to remove the kneepads. Carefully pry off the foam to expose the metal. Clean off any residue with a good quality adhesive remover. The satin black finish might be nice enough to leave exposed, otherwise you will have to prep, mask, paint again. There is no vinyl or leather on 73 and older dash metal. You will have to consider pulling your guages and removing the under guage material that was glued on there by the factory. It will look unfinished if you leave it in place with the lower edges exposed (no more foam)
Line up the early aluminum plates to verify that you have all the holes in the correct place. You can reuse the headlamp, emergency flasher, ignition switch, cig lighter, fog switch, defrost switch, glove box lock that your car came with.

Note on the Glove box knob and lock. If i remember the last backdate dash we did , keeping the 74 up door, we had to mill a small semi circle on the upper left edge of early alu plate trim to allow for proper alignment and clearance for the latch

All the switches, controls get installed AFTER you have completed the alu plate attachment ( local body supply shops sell double faced trim tape - approx 1/16" thick) AND your vinyl is glued down

Have fun

Thanks Dave.
Now I have a good shopping list.

I have the trim already and have recovered it with the Basket weave material. I bought a glove box from a 73 and have it installed, will have to do something with the latch set up. I trimmed the Controls for the aluminum to fit over but I do not like the look and would rather use and older one.

Thanks
Phil

Secured all the dash parts needed. I will keep the vinyl that is around the guages. I will probably paint the metal around the cig lighter etc, although I have thought of doing vinyl there.
Some progress shots leading to now. I re installed the new rubber above the bumpers after I installed it upside down, looks a whole lot better done right.
Three different shots of the drivers side showing the progress. The first one is when I got it 14 months ago, The next one 6 months after and the last one is a couple of weeks ago.

On to the next project, I have looked at 4 914's and everyone of them has had considerable rust. Looks like a welder is a must when doing one of them

Ok I got in the dash parts in. The Vent controls went in easy enough.
I decided to remove the foam all together, so I will have to paint that area at the switches.
I bought some older style switches but the new ones are in better shape so I am undecided on what to do there.

1. How do you guys that use an older glove box get them to close? It looks like there is a magnet area or something that the golve box would have to latch up to.

Quick Update. I did find a 73 glove box and mounted it so the glove box does not hit the passengers. Very little to update other than getting to drive it.
Next project is in the garage now.

Sure is, I have spent the last few days trying to figure out if 16x7's will fit in the rear of a 914.

sfoster13 05-23-2009 05:46 PM

Would you mind posting how you did the basketweave install on the dashboard trim? I'm about to undertake this project. Did you tuck it under at the edges or cut it flush? Did you glue or tape the aluminum trim frame to the dash?

w21055 05-24-2009 06:08 AM

I glued the basket weave in with the 3M weatherstrip glue and wrapped the ends. I used some heavy duty double stick tape to hold it to the dash. When the 100 degree days get here we will see if the double stick will hold up.

Just looking. I wanted a pre 73 narrow body for a while and looked at several but they were all rusted in the front or too pricey for my needs. Thought I might find a mid year and weld on some turn signals and away we go with another project. A 914 has been in my mind as next, but I can not find one that is not rusted.

pm sent.
