Post Shift knobs

So the leather knob that came with my car is starting to crumble...and I need to replace...I trying to decide which one...and thought I would get your advice...

So my options:

original plastic -- I like this because of originality and I am purist...but I think it is not the best feeling knob out there

959 -- the one piece leather which is nice...I have a leather boot now...but it is not one-piece with the knob...I know jack has this...I kinda don't like the bunchy look of the leather at the bottom...

MOMO -- I could do this, but then I feel like a rice boy racer (no offence to the ones who already have MOMO's, because this is the one I am leaning towards) I like the Aluminum Sport...remenicint of Ferraris and Lambos...but then how is it going to feel when my car has been sitting in the sun in SoCal weather...plus I would not get the polished version, but the gunmetal wersion on Pelican's site...

Thanks for suggestions, and pics of your setup would be great...

MJ

MoMO makes good products. Steering wheels, seats, shift knobs, etc... I have a momo steering wheel and the exact knob your thinking of. I love the feel of it, but it can feel cold in the morn and hot in the sun. I'm always trying to wipe the palm prints off it.

83SC - funny you should post this question, i went through this myself about 3 months ago...I am a purist as well, have an 88 carrera with linen interior and a leather wrapped knob...my knob crapped out as well, so, being a purist and too cheap to pay for the $73 Tweeks replacement knob (which I found out later had been discontinued in linen,) I went to my local thrift store (Goodwill, Salvation Army, you know) with the old dry rotted leather off my knob. I found there, for $1.50, a ladies old leather purse that matched my leather EXACTLY! Went home and with about 1/2 hour of cutting the purse into a pattern and creative sewing on my wife's machine, voila!!! A new leather cover, already broken in! I rolled the new leather on my knob (shift knob that is!) like a condom, a little hot glue to hold it in place, and she is good for another 50K miles! Beats the hell out of the $73 Tweeks version, and now I have a story for my grandkids!

Mark, love your story. Nothing would beat your own handwork for the car you love. It just too easy to buy if from the catalog. I don't know about the aluminum one. My friend has one of those in his car and it's just too hot to touch with bare hand in Southern California.

I have the Momo anatomic tall shift knob on my 83SC. I live in Texas and my car is a Targa, the heat is not a problem and I feel the taller knob helps in the shifting.

Wink

Playboy (yes, the magazine) http://www.playboy.com has billaird balls with the bunny logo on them-I can't decide whether to drill and tap the "12" ball or the black "8" ball for my '66 912...

Go for the black 8 ball - it'll match the furry dice hanging from your mirror

Does anyone know how to get the original, plastic knob off the shift lever?

Take a crescent wrench and adjust it so that it is a tadge bigger than the shaft of the shift lever. Place it under the shift knob and tap it with a mallet. Should pop right off, unless someone added some adhesive.

The inside will have a re-usable crush washer.
