weight diff between stock and Hight torq starter
Searched the world over and..anyone know the weight diiff between stock and H. Torq starter ?? Thought it would say as a selling pt. in Pelican parts catalog but does not.

One of the better parts I have installed. Mine was like 1/3 weight and 1/2 the size... The size thing is great when hugging the tranny ;) but that was about 10 years ago so my memory may have exaggerated, but not much ;) Works like a champ! With mine I had to combine 2 wires from stock to install the new one.

I think it's 8 lbs, but I don't have my weight saving spreadsheet with me.

maybe some one has a stock starter they can weigh ? I know the new one is 8 lbs

Ok ! I got off my lazy butt and took of the old starter and put on the new . I get about 8 lbs diff on bathroom scale.
So WOPEEE I am lighter then not air |
I found a net difference of 4lbs 3 oz. My original starter is a Bosch .8 HP.

THere's still hope.
There are two Bosch starters listed in PET. 923 604 101 00 0,8 ps 916 604 101 00 1,5 ps Mine is the first one. The part number doesn't appear on the starter, but the 0,8 is stamped into the housing. The 1,5 ps starter is specified for 74 thru 77 , so yours should be that version. Since it's quite a bit more powerful, it probably weighs more. |
Most "high-torque" starter motors for Porsches I've seen are not Bosch but a Denso or Hitachi motor with the correct mounting pieces for a 911. Direct-drive high-torque starter motors merely use larger armature wires to carry more current. This type would be heavier than the normal factory versions.
So-called "hi-torque" starters are actually gear-reduction motors. The motor is smaller and thus lighter, The motor armature rotates at a higher speed and drives the pinion gear through a reduction gear train. An analogy: A heavy duty, direct-drive starter is like Lance Armstrong with powerful legs and thighs. High torque is generated by sheer muscle strength. A lightweight, high speed starter is like me with my spinly legs spinning faster in a lower gear to generate the equivalent torque Lance creates (sure).
