82SC:

thanks! i will send you my addy soon. your 911 will be the "reference standard" because it is at a great stage to compare the sounds of it to other's cars.

i have had an idea for a LONG time and i am glad it is coming together:

get a recording of EVERY street Porsche ever made. get high quality recordings of the engines idling, revving, and sounds of the interiors. then when people say "i am looking to buy a Porsche and i want to know what to listen for... they will know what an engine out of tune, freshly rebuilt, and revving sounds like.

many people hear Porsche engines popping, sputtering, and making clicking and tapping noises. they think this is unusual and something must be wrong with the cars. they are not used to the intricate sounds these cars make. i make jabs at myself and call the 924 engine my "sewing machine under the hood" http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/wink.gif. i remember when i helped a friend move his newly rebuilt 356 Carrera. the engine had a beautiful sound very similar to a VW Beetle, but a lot more raw. i really wish i could have recorded it. it was pure music.

anyone ever heard a 962C at low idle? if you have then you will know that it sounds suspiciously like another engine. i won't give it away for the people that have heard it before, but the lasting impression is NOT that of something capable of 900+Hp... sounds more like 10Hp.

i must confess though, the only other Porsche racing engine sounds that can put a big smile on my face are the 924GTRs and the 996 GT3-Rs. this year i have some really big plans for the racing sounds archive. i am going to get entire races on tape for everyone to freely download and enjoy.

i'm so glad that we will finally have a good 911 reference to go by. thanks again!

I was at the Seattle Historic Races a few summers ago when Bruce McCaw had his 917 there to race. I was standing directly behind the car when his mechanic said he was going to fire up the beast, and I'd better move lest I lose my head from the blast. Of course I didn't move an inch! I can best describe the sound as if a mythological giant was ripping up huge sheets of canvas with his bare hands!! The sonic waves beat up not only my ears, but pounded my chest like a paramedic might do to save your life.
That's what 1200 hp feels like, bubba.

Doug,

that's AWESOME! i hear several 917s when i go to Watkins Glen. i have recordings of them on my site. wonderful cars!

the moment out of all that i really wish i could have recorded is last year when i was in the paddock and 2 DOZEN FORMULA 1 CARS all were getting ready to grid. these were everything from Repco-Brabhams to Wolfs, to Ferraris! I just stood there for a minute with those 24 engines revving up around me. it was soooo unreal. a true motorhead's paradise. i was SO PISSED that i didn't bring my recorder to record the sounds. this year i might step up to a portable DAT to get the car sounds. it all depends on if i can find one for a reasonable price.

Last year at the Tweeks "Red Porsche" event they pulled out two cars from their museum that had raced Le Mans around 1969? One was a Vette that had recorded 204 mph on the Mulsanne Straight, and I think a 908. They proceeded to rev those engines at the same time. The sound was deafenning, but memorable. Worth a trip to Illinois? Met Rarely there. Any others?
