Crazy Turning Signals

While driving last night, I noticed as I was making lane changes, my turning signals were acting funny. When I would press the lever left or right, sometime the opposite signal would blick on the dash board. And sometimes both would blick.

When I got home, I found that the exterior lights were working correctly. It was only the interior signals that were doing this. Any ideas?

My first thought was that there is a problem with the turning signal stalk.

I've had this problem intermittently on my 71 for years. I just recently had to replace the stalk and it still does it.

Many times this is simply a grounding issue. You must get into the light boxes and go back thru the brown wiring at each terminus. An improperly grounded light circuit will behave in many strange ways, sometimes finding a complete circuit thru a neighboring lamp holder. Then, they both light up.

I think that's normal on early cars; not sure when they changed.

Its not normal. My 73T does it intermitently too. Drives me nuts. Prob a grounding issue like Milt said. I havent had the time to figure it out yet.

grounding issue or a fusing issue. Check to make sure nothing is bare and/or touching in the fuse department.

No, when you get it right, the correct arrow lights. Only time both arrows light is when you use the emergency flashers.

Oops, was thinking of my '70 beetle. Was restoring it at the same time as the '73 911.

This morning I hit a bump and it seemed to correct things. Then it went back to not working properly. So maybe it is a grounding issue.

It is absolutely a grounding issue. Mine had it...I took the lights apart and found more rust than I cared to. Then I checked some other areas...next thing I knew it was 5 months later, and I'd spend thousands of dollars on sheetmetal and paint, and hundreds of hours welding and grinding and spraying, but it looked killer, and the indicators worked properly!
