I just got in a pair of 911 half shafts that I'll be using in my 914-V8 conversion. As I clean off 23 years of grease and dirt, I was wondering what would be the best way to tell the condition of the CV joints. I plan to dismantle the half shafts, clean out the CV's and regrease them, but is there a quick and dirty test for them? I suspect one of them (it's apart) is bad because of some wear in the outer asmy. Thanks for the input.

You can disassemble them and check for obvious pitting on the races and bearings. If you can put them in the car, you can check for lateral play in them as well (they will normally move some in the direction parallel to the 1/2 shaft). Its sort of hard to tell though. I think the easiest way is to clean and regrease them, put them on and see how they act on the car. They're not that hard to remove again if need be.

Some of the intellegence at this board has posted various pictures of bad ones--and I found a fried one on a pair I opened up. Shine from the ball is fine in both inner and outter casings--it's when they've eaten into the casing walls--The bad ones look like someone took a welding stick and burned grooves in there..........

Yes, past threads even contain pictures and assessments.
So, you're putting a V8 in an 914? Well, pardon me, but wouldn't that result in a very lightweight car with lots of horsepower? ------------------ '83 SC |

One of the 914-8's had like 300HP from a flat 8

It will be rather quick :-) Actually, the transaxle has been reworked with changed ratios and the brakes have been upgraded, so it will have some stopping power. And lastly, hopefully the CV's will stay in 1 piece (hence the 911 half shafts).

Took all 4 CV's apart last night and all of them show wear/pitting on both the inner and outer races. Suprisingly (for me at least), after removing the circle clips, all of the CV's slid right off without much effort. Also, two of the boots showed damage (one with a rip small rip and one that looks like the metal of the flange was hit with something), but the half-shafts came with 2 new boot/flange asmy's, so I'm in good shape there. Such is life on used parts but even with new CV's, I'll have less in the half-shafts than if I bought rebuilt complete units.
