Engine drop...turbo style
Any suggestions or turbo specifics? This should be a interesting weekend.

I don't envy you this task. Make sure your jack is up to the job, the motor and tranny will probably go upward of 700 pounds.
Why are you removing the engine? Keep us updated, I'll be doing the same thing before long myself. |
Yeah, what happened?

Hey guys, there is no major tragedy. I need to get into it for a full tune, valve adjust, and track down some oil leaks that are still hiding. Rarly noted some time ago that drops are part of the plan with these beasts because there is so much plumbing in way. The passenger side is not too bad but the other side is really a mess. I also am looking ahead to installing the fun go fast stuff and kind of look at this as a dry run.
Rarly I will keep you posted on just how much fun it actually is http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/wink.gif david 89 turbo cab |
Good to hear no major problems.
While you have the motor out try to find ways that facilitate valve adjustments with the motor in. Time well spent. I have no A/C so the passenger's side is clear. The driver's side has been cleared by removing the smog pump and related hoses that covered the intake valve cover. Now only the intercooler is in the way, and it can be moved. What upgrades are you doing? |
This time around I am just doing the pipes and a HKS. I want to get comfortable with playing on this thing so this is a simple start. This fall, bank account willing I will send the heads out for the BA style upgrades. I would like to twin plug but I doubt that is in the budget. I recall somebody saying that you can do the machine work then plug the extra holes until have the twin ingnition setup. The problem with turbo stuff is everything is 1-2K and you usually need the combination of several things to get the HP fix you are looking for.
This is a long ways off but any thoughts on cams? I am looking for a runner that comes alive 70mph and up so lag is not a real big concern. Can anyone say Silver State! http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/biggrin.gif thanks david 89 turbo cab |
I'm running SC cams in mine. Still have the CIS so this is about as good as it gets for a street-only car.
Personally, I don't think twin plugs are worth doing. None of the 911 single turbo cars had twin plugs from the factory. It might be a useful margin of safety, but I'd rather add a larger intercooler and lock in the boost at a reasonable level. What HP level do you desire? You might be surprized how much HP you can get from a CIS car without going into the motor. If you are looking for top end add a big turbo. Lots of free power at the same boost level.
