Post steam cleaning

Hey guys,
While I have my Altenator out, I can't see any problem with steam cleaning the inside the fan housing (actually a pressure washer hooked to an auqastar). There is about 1/8 to a 1/4 in. of goo on the top of the engine and cyls.
After 128,000 mile I guess I would have buildup too. If anyone knows any different please speak up before I ruin something.

Thanks
Tim in Sac

Question

(Gulp) Let us know how it works out okay? The famous last words of a redneck: "Hey,
WATCH THIS!" I honestly have no idea if this is a good move or not. Just be careful.

Ok,
Steamed cleaned cyls and top of engine. There was more gunk then expected. I can't tell if it runs cooler because of the weather here, but, the volume of air flow over the cylinders and hitting the ground has dramatically improved. Didn't find any mice though. I also thought the cylinders where cast iron and not aluminium, are these the alusils?

Tim...what year & model is your P car? Then somebody could advise on your p/c specs. Or at least tell you what was there in the first place.

Could you tell me where all the gunk went when it was removed from the pistons and cylinders? Does it just come out the bottom of the engine?
TIA,
Buck

Yes, 2 big piles of gunk under the cylinders on the ground, had to wash some off the heat exchangers also.

That gunk did not fall up, nor did it fall out of the alternator. You have a leak. The oil pressure switch (runs the oil pressure light) is suspect. It is near the center of the engine near the back, basically round about marble-sized with an electrical spade connector sticking out.

Might also be the gasket under the rectangular plate in the same location. When I had my engine out last, I neglected to replace the Oil Cooler Thermostat O-ring. Big mistake. That thing's under a disc-shaped plate on top of the engine closer to the oil cooler. Very cheap parts if you can get to them with the alternator out.
