Can't engage gears, horrible grinding noise
Just fineshed rebuilding my 915, and seemed to work. Did some 50 yrds driving, heard some strange noise, like driveshaft making ...clunk, clunk.... The gears engaged fine, but the noise was there. After making a stop, I was not able to engage any gears while engine running. A horrible grinding noise with every gear.....I guess it is time to take the whole thing off again..?
Any suggestions how to proceed? What should I do first? Does this sound like I have busted some gears in the tranny? I don't think I have left anything loose inside, but I guess I made some mistake rebuilding it. |

Sounds like trouble. I'd open the drain plug and check the fluid for metal and chunks. If that is what you find, then yes, you will need to open it up and see what happened.
Sorry to hear that.

I'm sure you have already double checked that the clutch is adjusted properly?
pedal throw, cable etc. never hurts to ask as I tend to overlook the easy stuff myself when things like that happen to me. Jeff |

Check the shift linkage as well, I had a similar thing happen to me when I forgot to tighten the linkage to the trans input shaft under the cover mounted at the rear of the shift tunnel. Hopefully its something simple.

Thanks for the hints. Past midnight here in Finland so I have to look into it tomorrow, hope I can sleep...
![]() Just thinking more how it behaved; if I have the car running, and put on any gear, there is no problem, until I release the clutch. Then start this very loud grinding and sort of tranny "shaking". I'll try these obvious "need to check first" items and hope I don't have to drop it again, even though this time it would be most like piece of cake, knowing exactly what to do. However, the fact that I can play with the gears with the cluch pedal in the floor tells me that the clutch can not be the problem, or can it? Another thing: what if I have the linkage adjusted wrong; I would think that I can get at least some gears engaging well? |

It sounds like potentially 2 gears are trying to engage at the same time, which would point to a misadjustment of the detents...

If you are pushing the clutch pedal to the floor and still grinding gears than its definitely clutch related since that means the clutch is not fully dis-engaging which could be due to an improperly adjusted clutch cable or the cable is broken.
Jeff Oh, just read your last post a little more careful, disregard what I just said ![]() Last edited by rsNINESOOPER; 02-26-2008 at 12:36 PM.. |

I had a similar problem, turned out the clutch throwout arm had broken.

Might want to check those axle bolts also. You might have dropped and axle.

Does the trans shift w/o the the engine running? If so, put the car in gear and your clutch in and crank it mindful that it's gonna jump but it might break your clutch free.

It does not appear to me a clutch problem. WIth car running at still, I can put it on neutral, and when I put the gears on and release the cluch there is a sound an feeling like the whole tranny would break into parts. So I don't suspect any clutch related problems.
Since I havenä't had time to look into it yet, I can't even guess. Maybe a slider has come off? |
