Does anyone know how to reset the ECU ( or engine management chip ) on a '88 Carrera Coupe.
I know that some cars, Honda for example, have a fuse which needs to be removed for a few seconds to reset the settings in the ECU to factory spec. Anyone have any ideas ? |

I'm not sure how much of a "reset" this might accomplish, but disconnect the battery for 10-15 minutes.

Is an '87 or '88 advanced enough to be "adaptive"? Maybe JWW would know for sure. I *think* (but am not sure) that it is not adaptive, in other words, it has fixed parameters that don't change, so "resetting" is not possible (it never moves off of its factory settings).
Anyways, I would think the most you could do on that car would be to disconnect the battery, as described above. Q: Why do you think it needs to be reset? |

I think what was stated above is correct. The 84-89 DME does not retain any engine information to be stored as trouble codes. The ECM only has preset parameters to run by what is obtained from the drivetrain's different sensors.
You usually reset an ECM to eliminate trouble codes that have been stored in the ECM as a result of engine malfunctions. I don't think the 84-89 DME's are capable of this. They're not like the 964 and later ECMs where you can use a code reader to obtain info. from the ECM. ------------------ Kevin 87 Carrera |
