Setting front ride height after upgrade???

I am having trouble getting the ride height even close after new torsion bars and ER polybronze bushings install.
I found this thread and others but still can't get it right.

Basically I am about 2" high in the front
How much do I need to compress the suspension when putting the Tbar caps on and then the adjusting bolt? I can't seem to make much difference in height any way I go.

I have gotten the back pretty close and it supposed to be the more difficult end to do. Go figure.

The fronts should be a LOT easier than the rears.
I am not sure I understand you though. Both wheels need to come off the ground if your sway bar is attached. loosen the adjuster nut, remove the cap and re-index on the bar a few splines so that when you load the weight back on you can adjust and measure again. I would put the caps on so that you have maximum lowering adjustability on each side. Lower the car off the jack stand, check your heights and and adjust downward if necessary.

I have the front on stands. The sway bar is attached. I think it may be binding. If I jack the wheel hub with the tbar adjuster bolt out the cap and tbar rotate. They shouldn't turn with the movement of the a-arm should it?

Yes. w/ the adjuster bolt out the only thing that the t-bar is attached to is the front of the a-arm itself.

w/ the bolt and adjusting cap off, jack the hub a couple of inches (since that's what you said that you're too high) and then put the cap on w/ the bolt adjustment in the middle and see where you end up. If it's too high but closer, put the adjustment side of the cap as low as it will go and try again. If not, jack a little higher and try again. Try to end up w/ your adjustment around the middle of the range when at the correct ride height.

It might take a couple times but once the light upstairs goes on you will see what's happening and it will be a piece of cake. Good luck!

jack up the front, take off the wheels, then take a tape measure and measure the existing "droop". buddy likes to measure from the top of strut to the top of rotor. note the distance. then take off tb cap, jack the a-arm up to get you that 2". ex. if your first measurement was 13", you then jack it up to 11". then set the tbar cap back in with it in the mid position. 3 and 9 oclock depending on which side of the car you are on. install the adjuster bolt till it touches the tbar cap arm. put wheels on, and check it out. now you have some fine adjusting to do. but basically you are done. with my 21 torsion bars up front, 12" droop just about nails it.

While jacking the drivers side a-arm the torsion bar rotates clockwise. When I install the tb cap and adjuster bolt in the center when I let the jack down the torsion bar rotates counterclockwise and then the adjuster bolt no longer is hitting the stop.

What am I missing here? I am really not dense but I feel like I am with this project. It seems like the suspension is binding and not coming down. I jumped on the front bumper and it won't budge.

That is what I had to do to get my front height down. The adjustment bolt does not contact the stop when the A-arm is at full droop.

You mean you had to jump on it to make it come down or?

tonythetarga 02-26-2008 12:25 PM

Hi Jerry,
Try this. With the adjuster cap off one side, lower the jack slowly and when the wheel makes contact watch and see if the a-arm binds or if the weight of the car lowers the car right down. If it is working right, it should drop right down and compress the shock.

the adjuster bolt wont hit the stop until the weight of the car (or jack) compresses the suspension. You are jacking the hub to simulate the weight of the car, installing the adjuster, then lowering the jack which is like lifting the car off the suspension.

When you put the real weight of the car on it, the adjuster will touch and the suspension will compress until the torsion bar is carrying all the weight.

Tony, I took your advice and took both caps off and let the car down to close to height with wheels on it. It compressed fine and I got them on. I may need to redo it cause I may be too low but at least I am not too high!

Thanks for the help.
