it sounds like switch may have shorted and is sending power to the wipers all the time

Do the wipers run?

I might spray water on the glass & run a wire directly to the motor to see if it runs then.

-could be 2 things wrong -- the lack of lube in the wiper blade shafts has caused them to freeze + short in switch

or the motor could have died...

If the motor is bad, why does it draw power with the switch OFF? If it's a faulty switch (always ON), then why doesn't the circuit wire overheat and melt; only the motor gets hot?

If a relay sends current to the motor, I can imagine the relay sticking closed all the time whether the switch is ON or OFF. The motor would then work all the time unless it decides to die simultaneously (overheat).

Dunno without looking closely at the circuit diagram.

The motor must have a internal switch that breaks when the motor parks the wipers in the proper off position...
Wouldn't the wipers just keep running if that switch was not functioning?
Perhaps there is power being applied at two or more of the "speed taps" that supply power to different points of the motor windings for different speed.
Pure speculation on my part....
There is a hot wire (on with ign or acc) to the motor for the park function...
Do you have a wiring diagram?
Could be a mechanical problem where the wipers don't park in the proper position...

When I bought mine, the first time I used the wipers, I thought I smelled the standard "hot electrical odor" but they worked fine. I don't normally drive the car in the rain. After a couple of months, I got caught in a downpour, and had to use the wipers, I smelled that "smell" again, and when I pulled under a covered area, I then noticed a wisp of smoke that appeared to be coming from the fresh air grille area. I turned them off . I got it into my shop, and started tearing it down to access the wiper transmission and the motor. I found that the motor was just about totally craped out. I checked the prices for the new motors....wow, that was an eye shocker, not cheap!!! I did luck out though, and found a NEW, still in the box correct motor. Saved some serious $$$$. I made the replacement, then all was well in the kingdom again! If you do need a new motor, shop around!!! They can be found for much less than the parts distributors have them. Good luck!! Tony.
