Anyone tried modifying SC stock heater ducts?

Has anyone ever modified the stock SC heater ducts to come up with a similar result as the heater duct backdate (less engine clutter)? Surely it CAN be done, not sure if it is worth the hassle though. I was wondering about cutting the outlet tube and rotating it and then reattaching somehow (epoxy?). Maybe a new outlet piece altogether and then attaching it to the stock fan attachement sectionw with epoxy or ?? Anyone ever tried to do this? I have not seen any threads in my searches, but it is hard to search for something and narrow it down to "SC" with the 3 letter rule...

I have seen it done on here, will look and see if I can dig up the old threads.

Tuna can + 2.5" PVC 90* elbow JB welded on the left side.

Drill a hole on right side blockoff plate and put another 90* elbow, JB weld it.

It works :)

Shane,
When I did this I went to SSI's but I think the process is much the same. As I recall, I needed to replace the right and left engine tin. The right side engine block off plate needs to be replaced with one with an output elbow to feed the right heat exchanger. The left side plastic block off is replaced with a sheetmetal verison that feeds the left heat exchanger. Pretty simple stuff but the block off plates can be pricey.

The new cam oil line for Carrera tensioner was longer than the original so the right side elbow would no longer fit, so I just covered the hole with Al tape until I can find some time to make fiberglass heater/block-off plates for both sides. As Ron said, I can think of many other ways to spend the money these simple plates cost.

FWIW, I'm not quite satisfied with the amount of hot air when the car is not running above ~3k RPM so I just might put the blower back on. I kinda need that with cold soggy mornings up here.

My cats love the smell of tuna in the morning...

Was the extra heating lost from the right side being blocked off, or did you have the same problem before it was blocked?

No offense....Maybe I'm too picky, but I would want a solution which MacGyver couldn't make up by combining his lunch pail and the contents of an HVAC installer's truck. Clever, though!

I saw a cool solution on MPEASTAND's car. They (Auto Associates) put inline blower motors on each duct from the Heat Exchangers. They welded stainless screens over the HE inlets so no rodents could crawl in. On the engine bay side, there was nothing, which was obviously nice and clean! You would just need a block off plate.

My flappers weren't adjusted properly but even then you don't get much air flow through the exchangers at idle speed, do a search and you'll see people with SSIs have the same issue.

Doug, that sounds like a great idea. Maybe I can cobble something together with some more HVAC parts? :D

Just as one would be unlikely to flog a highly tuned race car about the circuit and then not become aware of the enchanting odors wafting from the engine room, even the most throughly clensed and prepared of the feminine equivilent is unlikely to perform sans any friction caused emissions.
Change the oil as needed. Don't begrudge a naturally occuring fragrance.

there are only 2 things that smell like tuna fish... and 1 of them is tuna fish !!

Bob (I am still chuckling about the tuna cans... though very creative I must say... I just can't get past the smell though... ;-)
