Exhaust by-pass 964

Hi there!
Anyone willing to explain why I should buy a by-pass tube for my exhaust??What about trashing the original exhaust and by an aftermarket system, say Dansk??Anyone with some experience?Any good brands that does the job in a dyno??Or should I just forget about it?I own a Carrera 2 964 1992 since October,
Brgds

How thorough are the annual emissions inspections where you live? If lax to none the only drawbacks to headers and sport muffler are $$$$ and dB increses. B&B makes a nice 1.75" header but they require a proprietary muffler(or make your own, as I did with Fabiani pieces). Dansk will not bolt up to it. You could use ssi but it is sized too small for the 3.6 with 1.5" primaries. GHL also makes a header but I was never able to get information about it, maybe you will have better luck. FVD makes the nicest header and muffler but it will set you back twice the cost of the B&B(I was recently told that FVD is using Fabiani muffler). Here is a pic of the B&B/Fabiani set up on a 964 engine.

and here are some hp graphs

Thanks, Bill for some useful information!Nice pic youŽve got there...Makes me wannaŽ do it right away. The diagram looks rather promising - IŽll just have to stack up the money then :-)
Take Care and happy driving,
Brgds
Chris
P.S.I live in Sweden, and the tests are quite rigorous. My neighbours havenŽt complained on my stock muffler yet, but I can imagine...IŽt must not be 2 loud though...

Hi Bill!
Just wrote U a long reply, but messed it up, somehow...Nice installation on the pic - Makes me wannaŽ go ahead and do it right away.Just have to stack up the money...:-)
I live in Sweden, and the MOT;s are quite rigorous - plus my concerns abt the neighbours...They havenŽt complained yet, but thatŽs the stock muffler playing softly in the evenings. Therefore, it must not be 2 loud.
Thanks for info.IŽll shop around for the best deal.Happy driving,
Brgds Karl

hey Bill, just how loud is your set up, I mean, do you use your car as a daily driver? Any comments would be most appreciated as I am probably gonna get a similar set on my C2 some time soon.
Thanks

I have a 964 with the earlier exhaust (from an 87) and a similar dual-out muffler to Bill's. It's not quiet, but it's not unacceptably loud, either. You can dramatically reduce the volume by making a removable cap for one of the outlets. I've even used a tennis ball, and it's almost quiet enough to not wake the girlfriend when I'm sneaking in late.

Karl,

I recently replaced my primary muffler with a Dansk "cup-pipe". The rest of the system is stock (Georgia has pretty strict annual emissions extortion). I did this to reduce backpressure as I have an Autothority MAF intake. I have to say that the sound has a very satisfying throatyness to it but is NOT loud. I honestly can't say that it has increased performance to a noticeable level, but it sounds incredible at 5500 rpm. For the modest cost, I'm quite happy with the results. I understand that a cat bypass may offer more of a performance improvement, also at a modest cost.

Rgds,

I must have missed the last round of comments, Its a semi daily driver. The pic is of a preliminary fitting, I had to cut and piece together the 2.5" stainless tubing, and install the stock 964 heat setup(I should say the local "Rocket Scientist" did). Yes, it is loud, louder than the B&B which it replaced.(I like it though) my only concern is the dB meters at the local tracks, we'll see I guess.
