Oil Return Tubes Job - 76 911S
Does anyone know if the heat exchangers need to come on a 76 911? It's a toss up from a view down under.
Thanks. |

rick. i had a 75. i honestly did one side with the heat exchangers on. too much drinking because i cannot for the life of me remember which side is easier. the other side, no way. you could search some of my old threads. i ended up taking off the heat exchangers, and doing all 4 over again. with them out, it is a slam dunk.

Cool man. Thanks for input. I'll be working on the drivers side - smoking like hell. I've got a bunch of projects lined up. This weather is too damned nice for the car to sit in my garage. 70 degrees in Sacramento and the birds are chirping.

Hi,
I did my oil return tubes a while back - and I have zero mechanichal ability! It was a learning process for me - I have an 84 cab BTW. Anyway, I just sprayed WD40 on the heat exchanger nuts and then waited a day. Kept spraying WD40 on to reall soak everything. My heat exchangers came off no problem at all - and it sure made everything easier to get to. I had to use the special tool sold by our host. BTW - while I was in there, I discovered that I should replace all those exhaust gaskets. Also, while I had the heat exchangers off, I degreased the bottom of the car - and also cleaned them. They polish up real nice. I recently read a thread about spraying easy off oven cleaner on them - boy had I only thought of this! Lets see what else. Ahhhh - getting those tubes apart is not that easy at all. And you will need a pair of circlip pliers for the circlip. Thats about all I can think of - good luck - Mike |

Thanks for additional comments guys. Might as well clean things up down there while I'm at it. Easy off? I'll give it a try. I'm hesitant about taking off the heat exchangers -- so I'm going to cross my fingers until I'm sure I have to.
Thanks again gents. |

I just did mine on my '84. It was tight but I did not have to remove the exhaust. I'm not sure if you need to for your year car but I read a lot about my year "84" and many said that you needed to take off the exchanger at least on the drivers side......Not true. Post a pic of the underside of your engine if you have one.

Removing the Heat Exchangers was actually the easiest step. Trust me - its a piece of cake - as long as you spray on that WD40 and let it really soak. And it really really makes things easier to get at!.
