'88 911 highbeam switch faulty

Just curious - Has anyone had a faulty dimmer switch when using the turn signal upon completing a turn the dimmer switch fails to return to low beam and goes into high beam instead. Also experiencing the low beam switch failure to remain in low beam. It always fails and goes into high beam. Sutble wiggles affects the switch. Are there easy fixes such as bending the copper contacts?

You need to replace the high beam - low beam / turnsignal switch. But before you put a new switch in install a set of relays so the new switch contacts doesn't burn out like the current switch.

The German in their infinite wisdom decided not to use relays to control the current going to the headlamps, but used the contact in the switch to handle the load. Over time thru arcing the contact are destroyed and that is why you need to replace the switch.

Common problem. Many threads on this topic. To prevent this in the future, get some headlamp relays.

Try a search using terms:
headlight
switch
high
beams
Marcus sucro
and the like.

Be sure you read this thread: turn signal switch quick fix pictures

You can bend the contacts but that will only help you in the short term. Our host sells the relay kit for ~$25- and it's a pretty simple install. I just did it and now my switch (which I thought was shot) works fine.

I'd try adding the relay then see if you need a switch.

Good luck with it!

Paul.

Similar problem as mine. It happend that I just fixed mine today. The link from HarryD above is perfect for this task. I would recommend you to disconnect the battery before you start and test all lights before you put everything back together. The copper blades contacts on mine look good but somehow they doesn't work well. I had to bend them and test several times before I put them back together.

You can take the whole thing apart and clean it up, bend the contacts, and re-lube it.

Drill out the rivets, replace them with M2.5 screws when you are done.

Worked for me.
