Is it time for a clutch?

I have an '87 Coupe I've been driving daily since the weather got better recently. I've had my car for three years now and have had relatively enjoyed a trouble free ownership in the 7K miles I've rolled onto the odometer. Long and short, I've got 66K on the ticker YTD and have been noticing that If take off hard from a light, I do this about once a month. in every gear forward of 2nd at WOT the tach will race up and I start smelling the infamous burnt clutch smell. If I drive my car spiritedly at any speed, canyons, freeway, passing, merging etc... The clutch grabs hard and feels fine. It only does this when starting out from a dead stop. This is the third time in three months the car acted this way so I'm concerned. Today I had a wack-O in a 4-Cylinder Accord that was driving like a clown, I wanted to make sure he wasn't near my 911 or start kicking rocks up so at a merge I took off kind of hard, and the tach ran away in ever gear from 2-4? quite embarrassing too.

Jim

When the Tach "runs" upward, is the clutch slipping?

Best,

It sounds like you are describing the clutch slipping. If it's not a problem with your slave cylinder or hydraulics then it is your clutch. It is only going to get worst and it's going to happen quickly. Start pricing out solutions, places to do the work, parts....etc. You don't want to be caught with your pants down when it slips in every gear all the time. (It happened to me once, that sucked)

Yes it does slip when the tach runs away. Whats weird is that you would think I could get it to do it again right after and then it just grabs. Would a clutch at 66K be considered pre-mature? To my knowledge I'm the 3rd owner, and the car has never been tracked or DE. What am I looking at ball park wise for a clutch job, and are there any option better than OE or should I just stick with OE?

The PO had the clutch replaced on my car just before I bought it. It was a G50 also and parts/labour came to about 2K.

If it is intermittent I would not rule out a problem with the pedal actuation, slave cylinder sticking, or whatever else is involved with the actuation of the clutch.
