How do I fix this ?
 

Hi all,

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the random blowing of the electric window fuse on my 87 Carrera. I finally was able to do some testing as suggested and in fact it does prove to be where the wire loom goes into the door. If I open the driver door to the stop, the fuse blows. Obviously a short there.

My question is...Is door removal required to get this fixed or is there some way to pull slack into the cabin or door to fix the problem?

Should be able to access the door wiring by removing the door panel.
Removing the door shouldn't be required.
Look for the obvious but be prepared to have a good look around.
Pull the battery post while snooping around.

Common problem. My door speaker wires did the same thing. I was able to fabricate a new harness section and thread it through without removing the door, but it was a whore, and plenty of choice epithets were employed. I did need someone to give me a hand with it. Drink 3 beers to get in the right frame of mind, make sure someone's around to help you, get a couple of coat hangers and twine and set to. Good luck,

Thanks guys, I will have to it right now. First I have to find a thread on how to remove the (I believe aftermarket) speakers. They are Boston Acoustics and for the life of me, I cant figure out how to get the grills off.

the wires break and/or the metal core shows through the covering right where the loom bends between door and cowl. even the loom covering cracks, and you can often see the wire problem right there.

My guess is that the grill is attached to the door panel and the speaker is attached to the door frame probably like my SC's speaker. Before you start yanking wires take pictures especially the window switches.

I had the same issue. Took the car to a stereo shop and they managed to fix the harness and thread it back through. Installer said 911's are one of the tougher installs.

The door has to come off or you will be there all frickin day.

First of all, the speakers were nuts. I had to pry the grill out of the frame as the mounting screws were behind them. No problem though as I believe they were designed that way. Gotta love Boston speakers.

After the panel was off, I quickly realized that there was no way I was going to get that frayed wire fixed without major time. SO, I pulled the pins on the door hinges and slid the door out a few inches. Bingo, there was the short. Easy to find and even easier to fix. It's back together and working perfectly.
