Header Options

I have an early 2.4T with Webers and a little hotter cam and strongly

considering getting rid of my stock heat exchangers and installing Headers.

Im wondering if this is a good upgrade to do for performance and longevity.

Is it also better/needed to install the Heat Wrap around the headers?

Which are recommended for my config and which ones should I stay away

from?

Headers of the correct size (1.5") will not make any more power on your mildly-tuned engine, but it will run a little cooler due to better airflow around and under the cylinders.

I would not use header wrap on anything due to severe corrosion issues, but I've had excellent results using a thermal barrier coating on the headers we buy, use, and recommend.

What headers do you offer for this engine? What is this thermal barrier coating..

Anyone Use these? How would they rate?

RichF 03-02-2008 07:16 AM

from what I hear those are to big cars under 3.0

GotaT 03-02-2008 04:43 PM

What do you mean by "to big" ?

RichF 03-03-2008 03:20 AM

from what I hear the pipe size is to big for the cars under 3.0, there was just a thread about all this let me find it.

After reading some stuff they may work just fine, I saw that some manufactures said 1 3/4" is the biggest for cars under 3.0 some said 1 5/8", 1 1/2". Those obx have 1 11/16" primary tube lenghts witch falls right at the 1 5/8"- 1 3/4". Im gonna buyem.

Sounds like you've done some research on these headers. Are you planning on just installing them just as they come, or adding some sort of wrap to them?

1 11/16 is just a "line" above the 1 5/8 and a line below the 1 3/4

Do you know if they will enhance performance in any way as opposed to the stock system?

RichF 03-03-2008 08:16 AM

I read somewhere that header wrap promotes corrosion, and plus the SS looks to nice to cover up. As for the gains I have know Idea but I’m guessing that if you go from heat exchangers to headers it’s a gain right there. The only reasons I’m going to go with OBX 1.) Price and material, 2.) The style cause I want to do a dual straight piped exhaust.

Anyone else chime in on Performance gains ....

I have them on my 3.2 and couldn't be happier with them. The primary ID os 1-5/8". Stainless is nice, as you don't have to worry about getting them coated. Downside is you will not have a heater anymore. Also, this is the one and only size OBX has for 911's right now. For a basically stock motor, IMHO headers are headers, as far as performance. Some come with a heater box, and a true header does not. You should be more concerned with the coating. Your real performance upgrade will be the combo of the header with a high flow muffler. I strongly recommend the Dynomax Ultra Flow Stainless ($190.) Since you are considering the headers anyway, I would go with the 2-in 2 -out. Tough to compare numbers on a 2.4 vs. a 3.2, but I went from a stock 207hp to 245hp at the flywheel with OBX, Dynomax, and a SW Chip.

Hi PatrickB

I am considering a full exhuast for my 3.2. Can I get some details on your setup? Did you have to change any oil lines?

Thanks

IMHO don't jump yet. Do a little more research. Exhaust larger than 1 1/2 dia on a 2.4 may cost you power rather than increase power. There is a definite relationship between displacement (cubic inches) and exhaust size. I'm running 1 1/2" headers on my 2.7 and I'm building a 3.0 but I'm staying with the 1 1/2 headers, I'll just be on the line between 1 1/2 and 1 5/8.

Patrick,

Did you have custom pipes bent from the headers or did you find some off the shelf header to "street" adapters back to muffler segment. Obviously you went aftermarket on muffler and rear piping. In my appplication I was hoping to connnect a set to my M&K muffler with off the shelf adapters. OBX doesn't seem to know if their header works with the off the shelf "street adapters" for other headers to connect to an OEM style muffler. Anyone know this? Thanks

PatrickB 03-03-2008 05:52 PM

Rather than spend $650 or more for a muffler that would fit with a Porsche OEM manifold or get "stuck" having to purchase a matched muffler to header set ala B&B or GHL, I purchased a muffler for a third the price that has 2-3 times better flow. Any half way decent muffler shop can fab some extensions to connect the header to the muffler. The key is getting a strong support bracket welded to the muffler. Good strong support for the muffler lessens the chance for vibration transferred to the headers. Muffler shop will charge between $100-200 to do this work.
