On my 82 SC I have Pirelle P-700Z 205/55 ZR 16 in the front and 245/45 ZR16 on the rear. Tonight while I was driving, I was taking a sweeping right curve on a on ramp to the freeway when the left tire rubbed on the fender. After I strightened up, I hit a bump in the road and it rubbed again. (I am on a dive rescue team and was on my to a call out, so I was going a little faster than normal) When I got home I noticed cut marks on the outside edge of the tire tread where it has been rubbed or cut in the past. I found a small mark on the right tire but the left side had marks all the way around the tire.
I was told the car had been lowered but is this damage to the tire from being lowered or do I need to check the front end? I will need to get new tires soon but want to fix the problem before I get them. I found a buldge on the underside lip of the left fender which I pushed back. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate any help. |

It's the inner fender lip. You may want to use the baseball bat trick to roll that inner lip up. I did it on my Carrera, and it's none the worse for wear.
If you do a pelican search on "baseball bat" you ought to find a post that explains how this is done. You'll kill that tire if you contine that way though. ------------------ Kurt B '84 Carrera Cab. carrera_cabriolet@yahoo.com |

That doesn't sound normal, my '79 euro started life lower than the US cars ( bumper regs ) and was lowered in Germany, the 16x7s with 205/55-16 rubber don't rub on the front.
I haven't looked for a long time but I don't remember the edges of the wheel well having been modified on mine. I put P700s on when they first came out, no problems. I could imagine a tread design with BIG blocks along the edge being a problem, but you might get your camber checked. ------------------ Charlie Baer '79 Euro 911SC [This message has been edited by thabaer (edited 04-24-2001).] |

I thought that 205/55 16 was the max. factory std. size for the front tires. Should be no problem, isn't for my 87.

You didn't say what your wheels are. If you have aftermarket, offset may not be right.
My experience is that the stock 205/55/16 in front is a very close fit with littler margin for error. Mess with the offset and you have problems. Based on your description, rolling the lips should resolve this. |

I POSTED A FEW DAYS AGO ON ALIGNMENT WHERE I HAD STEVE ALARCON @ JOHNSON'S ALIGNMENTFIX THE RIDE HEIGHT ON MY 89 911. THEY RAISED THE FRONT & REAR (TIRE RUB ON REAR) AND CORNER BALANCED & I HAD NEW RUBBER INSTALLED. SOUND LIKE YOU MAY NEED TO DO THE SAME THING.
