I have a 1982 911SC...and when my engine is warm (thus thermostat is open) I can hear the oil burrble and gurggle by under the passenger's foot well...
does anyone else hear this...sometimes it is loud... I thought there was air in the system so I ran the car without the oil cap...but no change... So is the oil cavitating in the system? do I have obstructions??? thanks MJ |

Look under the car make sure the oil lines
are not pinched.... If they look ok then the gurguling should be no problem. ------------------

This is completely normal on a 911 with a front cooler. It even happens on the 993. It can get pretty loud at times.

It happens to mine after start up when I park over night on an incline, nose down.

I've never heard that in a 911, and my current 911 doesn't do that.
It don't know for sure, but that doesn't strike me as "normal" behavior. I can't see why there should be any air in the lines near the front of the car. It seems it should be a solid flow of oil, which would not make any "gurgling" noise. Esp. on an SC, which has just the trombone loop. I do hear often hear the oil as it is being dumped back into the tank, but that is a sound from the tank, in the back. But you sound like you are describing something different. |

Interesting comment about the Fram oil filter causing noise. I know for a fact that certain oil filters can be noisy on their own. The rattle made can even mimic tensioner and chain noise. Last year, I used two German made filters sold by Pep Boys and
both rattled. It could be heard from inside the car. Changed to the OEM and no noise. |

I had a Fram on ly 911 once. It gurgled loudly. It was removed in less than thirty miles. I use only Mahle now.
The oil cooler line gurgle happens too, but not as loudly as that Fram filter did. ------------------ '83 SC |

Your real problem is that the muffler is far too quiet! Rev the motor up a bit higher and listen to the "music" it makes and press on!

I just did the Heat Exchanger back date so I think the muffler is plently loud...
it doesn't happen all the time, I think it is when the oil is at a certain level, and maybe pulls some air as it is pumped to the front. |

I had a new '82 - it gurgled just as you say your car does. My present '87 doesn't and I don't believe my previous '85 did either. I think it's just a normal deal on an '82.
