Post overfilled oil final part

I cleaned out the air box, and lucky for me no oil sprayed on the engine or on my new freshly painted decklid. It could have been much worse. Now I need to figure out how much oil I have in the tank without starting it again. I live in a detatched condo community and there are lots of older people around me and if they see smoke they will grab the phone and call the fire dept and I dont need that right now. With the engine off the stick reads right on the minimum marker. I just need an idea of what I have in the tank so I dont put on another smoke show. Anyone have any ideas...TargaEuro

If it is reading minimum you should be fine to start it. If you are really concerned, drain it and start over.

A Porsche engine is designed to run below 4000 rpms with very little oil in it (like more than four quarts low, as I remember). I would take out as much as four quarts, to be safe, and then run it, and add as needed once the car is warmed up to 180.

Targa,

Start it, and head for the gate, drive the car until its warm then stop and check the oil level at this time, its the only way to accurately tell how much oil you REALLY have in the tank. Pls it will put a smile on your face!

last week my lawnmower put out as much smoke as i've seen from a well oiled 911 exhaust system. total whiteout. guess it's toast. i did enjoy seeing my a**hole neighbors freak out as the cloud lingered in their yard.

I think if the oil shows on the stick when the engine is cold and off you have too much oil in it. I just checked the oil in my '87 (cold and not running) no oil shows on the stick.

Yeah John, a friend of mine tells a story about losing the the modulation valve diaphram on his dodge van. As it injected transmission fluid via the vacuum hose straight into the intake causing it to smoke really bad. As he was limping around the last corner for home it backfired and blew out a 10 foot or so smoke ring. He had to pull over (laughing to hard to drive) as a frightened jogger tried to outrun the giant smoke ring.
