1970 911E heat exchangers on an SC

Will 1970 911E heat exchangers retrofit my '81 911sc for a performance upgrade? I thought I was told they would but nobody will clarify thew years that will work.

any help on this is greatly appreciated.

Rob

They will, but you will need to backdate your muffler and one of the oil lines at the same time...

Is the header diameter large enough?

they will work and I have done it before. you will need different length exhaust studs because your sc has a bigger flange for the heat exchanger than an early car. I would recommend replacing those along with the list of other new parts you will need i.e. (the oil line and associated backdate parts)

all in all though buying the complete setup from ssi is the way to go on one, but if making it work is all you want to do get to gettin a couple of new parts to go with those old ones.

have fun with it!

I think it will work as-is.

wrt SSI's > there are thin-flange SSIs and "thick flange SSI's . The flange being the depth of the SSI flange where it meets the exhaust port.

I did SSIs [and a M&K exhaust] last year. My 80 SC [Euro] took the thin flange SSIs. I bought the SSIs off Pelican used parts.

You will need to modify one of your oil lines > one that connects to the oil thermostat.

Do a search on the procedure> I think there are a couple of good write ups on it.

Be VERY careful when disconnecting the line from the oil thermostat > as if you fracture that > it's major trouble...

also be careful on removing exhaust nuts... Need a torch..

all in all > SSIs and M&K exhaust has been the best mod > most bang for the buck to my car

enjoy

you can make short spacer sleeves for the exhaust studs and save yourself a whole lotta trouble.

heat exchanger upgrades for an SC

John Walker,

Unfortunately, I have ,limited space and even more limited knowledge of making anything mechanical (lol) Interior and cosmetics, I am good to go...that's why I turn to you for advice!

On that note, thanks so much and keep the advice coming! I am definitely going for the upgrade...most likely 1970 911e exchangers but might splurge for some SSIs if the taxman graces me with a refund.

So will all the early style heat exchangers work on the later cars? Do they all have the same diameter header pipes? Wouldn't a header that's appropriate for the smaller displacement engines (2.2, 2.4, 2.7, etc.) be too small for a 3.0?
